The Breakers, Newport Mansions

In our opinion, it is one of the most incredible places in America, rich in history and blessed with beautiful landscapes. We recently had the chance to visit The Breakers, one of the most famous and opulent Gilded Age mansions in the United States. Built between 1893 and 1895, it was commissioned by Cornelius Vanderbilt II, a prominent member of the wealthy Vanderbilt family. The mansion was designed by the renowned architect Richard Morris Hunt, with interiors crafted by Jules Allard and Sons and Ogden Codman Jr. The mansion is an exquisite example of Italian Renaissance architecture, heavily inspired by European palaces, particularly those from 16th-century Italy. Spanning 70 rooms and covering approximately 125,000 square feet, The Breakers features grand halls, luxurious bedrooms, an elegant dining room, a music room, and much more. Lavish materials such as marble, limestone, and gilded elements were used throughout, giving the mansion an unreal beauty and an air of incredible luxury. The estate sits on 13 acres with breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean. Its meticulously maintained gardens, sculptures, and terraces further elevate the mansion’s grandeur. We spent hours exploring the grounds, thoroughly impressed by the impeccable maintenance and preservation efforts that have kept this place in such remarkable condition. We can confidently say that the Breakers is a must-see for visitors interested in history, architecture, and the extravagant lifestyles of America’s wealthiest families during the Gilded Age.
