Todaiji Temple is the head temple of the Kegon sect of Buddhism in Nara City, Nara Prefecture. It was founded in 752 during the Nara period at the request of Emperor Shomu. The principal image of the temple is a Great Buddha called Rushanabutsu, which stands at about 15 meters tall and is widely known as one of the largest gilt bronze Buddha statues in the world. The current Great Buddha Hall (the building that houses the Great Buddha) was rebuilt during the Edo period and is one of the world's largest wooden buildings. It is registered as a World Heritage Site as part of the cultural assets of the ancient capital of Nara, and is a representative tourist spot in Nara, attracting many worshippers from both Japan and abroad.
