Todaiji Temple Review: Look up at the Buddha statue and listen to the echo of thousands of years

Todaiji Temple, located in Nara Park, was the most stunning stop during my trip to Japan. It's not just because it is a world cultural heritage, but also because the Vairocana Buddha sitting in the Great Buddha Hall, gazing at us quietly, seems to be able to travel through thousands of years and talk to you. One of the largest wooden buildings in the world The Great Buddha Hall (大仏殿) at Todaiji Temple is a wonder in itself. The first time you stand in front of it, it is hard not to be overwhelmed by its spectacular aura - the nearly 50-meter-high wooden building is full of aura, making you instantly feel the skills and power of faith of ancient Japanese craftsmen. What’s even more amazing is that the scale of what we see now is a reduced version, and the original building was much more magnificent. This makes me deeply admire the technology of ancient Japanese architecture. Vairocana Buddha: tranquility and majesty coexist As you enter the hall, the huge **Vairocana Buddha (Big Buddha)** comes into view - 15 meters high, made of copper, with a calm and compassionate aura. When standing under the Buddha statue, one will unconsciously slow down his pace and lower his voice, as if afraid of disturbing this being that has been guarding Nara for thousands of years. He is not just a religious symbol, but more like the spiritual pillar of this city. Not only the Buddha, but also the details are worth savoring In addition to the main Buddha, there are many Buddha statues and wood carving details around the hall, which are well preserved and worth careful appreciation. The most interesting thing is the "pillar hole" at the back of the main hall. It is said that passing through this pillar hole, which is as wide as the nostrils of the Buddha statue, can bring blessings of peace. Although there are many people queuing, seeing adults and children all challenging it with a smile, the whole atmosphere is very warm. Travel Tips • It is recommended to come in the morning or evening when the light is soft and perfect for photography. • There is a ticket to enter, but it is definitely worth it (and the fee goes towards the restoration and preservation of the temple). • There are many cute deer around, remember to bring some deer crackers and experience the interactive fun. • Don’t miss the South Gate and the gatekeeper statue outside the temple, which are as majestic as the main hall.
