Laomendong is a must-see in Nanjing.

Laomendong is a historical and cultural district in Nanjing. It is located east of the southern gate of Nanjing (Zhonghua Gate), hence the name "Mendong" (east of the gate). Naturally, there is also a "Menxi" (west of the gate). It is an important part of the Qinhuai River Scenic Belt in Nanjing's Confucius Temple area. Historically, it was one of the most prosperous commercial areas in Nanjing. The history of Laomendong can be traced back to the Three Kingdoms period. During the Ming Dynasty, the southern city gate, Jubao Gate (later known as Zhonghua Gate), developed and prospered, retaining the traditional appearance and layout of streets from the Ming and Qing Dynasties. In the 1990s, the Confucius Temple area underwent comprehensive restoration and renovation, becoming a hotspot for folk tourism and a commercial sub-center in Nanjing. It officially opened to the public on September 29, 2013. After thousands of years, Laomendong is full of vitality, welcoming visitors from all over the world.
