Guanwang Temple on Gaochun Old Street.

Guanwang Temple is located on Gaochun Old Street in Gaochun District, Nanjing. It is a Taoist temple dedicated to Guan Yu, a famous general from the Three Kingdoms period. It is the only temple in the Jiangnan region that is dedicated to Guan Yu. The temple was first built in the fourth year of the Hongzhi era of the Ming Dynasty (1491) by Gao Zhen. Guanwang Temple has two long couplets: "Born in Jiezhou, assisted in Yuzhou, protected Jingzhou, and dominated the southwest, the mountains and rivers under his control; served Xuande, was friends with Yide, and was enemies with Mengde, his power shook China, and he was the most clear-eyed towards the Han traitors." "Red face and red heart, rode the Red Hare to chase the moon, guarded Guanzhong and did not forget the Red Emperor; green scarf and green history, wielded the Green Dragon Crescent Blade, was not ashamed of the clear sky in the hidden places." These couplets can be said to summarize Guan Yu's life. They are famous lines in the temple. Guan Yu's loyalty, righteousness, and bravery, as well as his moral character, are admired and praised by people. He was enshrined on the throne of the gods, and Guanwang Temple was born as a result. Legend has it that the 13th day of the fifth lunar month is Guan Yu's birthday. There is a custom among the people to hold a "Guanwang Meeting" to commemorate this legendary general. The Guanwang Meeting also involves setting up a stage to perform operas to ensure local peace. There are also those who set up stalls, perform acrobatics, sell snacks, and blow sugar people all come to the market, and the scene is very grand.
