Manuel Fernández Pl. Julián Romea 30001 Murcia Don Manuel Fernández Caballero (Murcia, 1835 - Madrid, 1906), an outstanding and prolific musician from Murcia who spent his life throughout the country Having achieved great success within and abroad, he is considered one of the originators of the Spanish Zarzuela music genre. Browsing through the local newspaper library we find that, in early 1935, there are constant references to the grand tribute organized to commemorate the centenary of the birth of the composer Fernandez Caballero, as well as to many other events, most of which were dedicated to his memory of musical nature, and commissioned by a committee headed by Dr. Pérez Mateos, this monument was erected in his honor to commemorate another of the glories of the earth, the sculptor José Planes Pé Nialhuer (Espinado Murcia, 1891 - 1974). The pyramidal structure of the monument is made of limestone and is divided into three levels: on the lower level, the front shows the bronze shield of the city of Murcia, and on the stone, starting from the upper body, is a partial inscription: «To the teacher Fernandez Caballero. 1935. The front is flanked by some high reliefs with female figures and musical allegories; on the right, one holds a booklet of music scores, another holds a clarinet, and on the left a harp and tambourine, a style consistent with the music of Don Manuel Popular musical instrument. The reverse is engraved with a list of some of the author's zarzuelas: El Dúo de la Africaa, Gigantes y Cabezudos, Los nephews del Captain Grant... The second body is a round figure of Fernandez Caballero wrapped in a wide cloak and sporting his characteristic moustache, and in the last body, an allegory of fame, a bronze female figure holding up the traditional moon Osmanthus wreath. In 2009, due to the renovation of Romiya Square, the monument was moved from the center of the square to a corner, losing all its prominence. Furthermore, its current conservation status is precarious, to say the least. I take this opportunity to sound a wake-up call to all concerned: We have an obligation to protect our heritage.
