Matsue Castle (松江城, Matsue-jō) is a historic Japanese castle located in Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture, in western Japan. It's one of only 12 remaining original castles in Japan, meaning its main keep (tenshu) survived natural disasters, wars, and modernization without being rebuilt from scratch. Built: 1607–1611 by Horio Yoshiharu Style: Early Edo Period; black wooden exterior with a striking, defensive design Nickname: "The Black Castle" (Kurokabe-jō) Designation: National Treasure of Japan (since 2015)
