Su Taung Pyi Pagoda

Even if you are not religiously inclined, there is reason to visit this shrine, atop Mandalay Hill ---nearly 250 metres above MSL. From all sides of the Pagoda, there are stunning views of Mandalay and the surrounding areas. For a history buff, there is another perspective. This holy place was witness to ungodly bloodshed during World War II. In 1945, the Japanese army and the Indian Gurkha rifles fought a fierce do-or-die battle; the Hill was captured by the Allies with enormous loss of life. As per folklore, even in this tumultuous situation, the Buddhist monk U Khanti continued his meditation on the Hill and was found unscathed after the battle. He was protected by giant cobras; this temple has a tradition of Snake-worship. The temple draws huge crowds, and yet is neatly maintained. The temple was enhanced and beautified by several kings. Of special interest are the pillars with ornate mirror work --- reminding one of Islamic style. I found one corner particularly very inspiring: where a serene Buddha has Hindu Celestials --Indra and Brahma in attendance.
