What do you think of when you hear about knights of the realm and beautiful castles? Do you think of something from a Disney film? Well, this is the reality at Malbork Castle, a beautiful castle located in North-Eastern Poland that is located only 30 minutes away from the popular tourist city of Gdańsk. If you’re in Gdańsk, it is definitely worth doing a day trip to visit this Castle. This castle contains so many secrets! Did you know that this is the largest castle in the world by land area?!? The castle dates back to the 13th century, and it has everything that you would expect from a Castle dating back to the Middle Ages. You’ll find drawbridges, gates, moats and secret passageways within the confines of this building. This Castle was built as a Castle for the Teutonic Knights. A group of knights who fought in the Crusades - fighting for land in Jerusalem and also to build hospitals. The knights still exist today, but as a charity rather than as a military institution. We visited the Castle on a Monday, which meant that the indoor areas of the Castle weren’t open. But there was more than enough to see in the outdoor area, otherwise known as the Green Route. Entry was 30 złoty, or about £6, and for this price, you could get a free audio guide included.
