Locals affectionately call it 'Rossio,' and it remains a beloved meeting spot in Lisbon, surrounded by cafes, theaters, and shops. 🏛️ History and Symbolism of the Square At the center of the square stands a statue of Pedro IV (Dom Pedro IV) atop a white marble column, guarding the heart of the city. He was the first emperor of Brazil and a king of Portugal, symbolizing the historical connection between Portugal and Brazil. Surrounding the column are four intricately carved bronze statues representing Justice, Wisdom, Courage, and Temperance, embodying the ideals of the era he ruled. 🌊 Wavy Patterns and a Classic Atmosphere The square's black-and-white wave-patterned mosaic pavement is one of Lisbon's iconic sights. Up close, the small stones are meticulously arranged, and from a distance, they create an optical illusion of flowing waves.
