In terms of natural environ, the Jojakko-ji Temple brings to the large selection of temple visits in Arashiyama another kind of aura. Jojakko-ji Temple was founded in 1596, at a time when Japan was mired in civil wars and right at the dawn of the Edo period. The temple is of the Nichiren School of Japanese Buddhism. Based on the teachings of the Lotus Sutra, the Buddhist priest Nichiren developed this school of Buddhism during the Kamakura period in the 13th century. Nichiren Buddhism was thought to be one of the “six new schools” of Kamakura Buddhism that emerged in this time. Arose in a time of civil strife in Japan, Nichiren Buddhism advocated for a practical application of the Lotus Sutra in one’s individual life, including both meditation and actions, to eventually benefit the society at large. As a priest, Nichiren argued against the other popular schools of Buddhism that proposed competing views about the doctrinal teachings of the Lotus Sutra. In fact, he was very much against Zen Buddhism, which was a preeminent school of practice in Arashiyama. There are four main structures in the Jojakko-ji Temple. From the ground up, you would go through the Niomon Gate first, then Hondo to your right, Myoken-do to your left, and Tahoto at an even higher vantage point. Meaning “the temple of the dragon at peace,” Ryoan-ji Temple was originally the villa of the Fujiwara family during the Heian period. Fujiwara Saneyoshi built the first temple on site, the Daiju-in, and the large pond in the family estate in the 11th century. The powerful warlord, deputy to the shogun, Hosokawa Katsumoto, acquired the land in 1450 and built the Ryoan-ji Temple. The Ryoanji-Temple is a Zen temple. It is undisputed that the original temple was destroyed during the Onin War between the clans. Hosokawa Katsumoto’s son rebuilt the temple in 1488. Perhaps of a more modern relevance is that Queen Elizabeth requested to tour the Ryoanji-Temple in her visit to Japan in 1975. She had high praise for the beauty of this temple. The Ryoan-ji Temple was tranquil. At that early morning hour there were very few tourists, and I could walk around in peace. There are three main sites to see: the famous Rock Garden, the large Kyoyochi Pond and the garden space. Due to time constraints, I did not go inside the Ryoan-ji Temple because, like so many other temples, shoes must be taken off to go inside. The Rock Garden is a famous classic Zen garden. Kyoyochi Pond, meaning “mirror-shaped pond,” comes with a half loop to walk around. There are three small islands on the pond. Unlike the bigger temples, such as Tenryu-ji, Jojakko-ji or the Nison-in Temple, Gio-ji appears, at first glance, to pale significantly in terms of the heritage that other temples rightly take pride in. Yet Gio-ji Temple has a history that moves one to tears. Its story illuminates the weight of Buddhism as a personal faith, in the ways that it lifts human beings from dramatic times of emotional suffering. The history was a legend retold. During the Heian period, Shirabyoshi was a popular form of entertainment. The female performer sang and danced in a simple rhythm, and they dressed in men’s attire as they performed. Our protagonist is the beautiful woman Gio, who performed before the nobility in Kyoto during the late 12th century. Her performances captivated the powerful military leader Taira no Kiyomori. He took her in as his favored consort, but this was no happy ending for Gio. Taira no Kiyomori then fell for another dancer named Hotoke Gozen. Gio fell out of favor, and in the pain of unrequited love and humiliation, she made a critical decision to leave her former life behind. Along with her mother and sister, Gio arrived at Gio-ji Temple, which was to be named after her, to live a life of reclusion as a Buddhist nun. As fate goes, Hotoke Gozen would eventually join Gio in the Gio-ij Temple herself, seeking forgiveness and a redeemed, quiet life of Buddhist asceticism as well. A recurrent theme in this tale is the idea of karma. As these women’s former lives were entangled in webs of jealousy and rivalry, Buddhism came to them as the final answer for spiritual resolution. If the 1,200 rakan statues that stand at the Otagi Nenbutsu-ji Temple represent the Buddhist followers’ celebration of their faith in life, then the 8,000 stone markers at the Adashino Nenbutsu-ji Temple are the proper tribute to death. I saw an unintended and unlikely juxtaposition between the two temples that presented the occasion for a philosophical appreciation of life, coming full circle from living to death. Like the church graveyards of medieval times in European countries, the temples of Japan were often sites of burials as well. The Adashino Nenbutsu-ji Temple, however, originated from the burial of the dead. During the Heian period, the Adashino Nenbutsu-ji Temple had an eerie past as a site of open burial for those who had no family or friends who could oversee a proper rite for their passing. At some point in history, the remains were buried in a simple manner. The stone pillars memorialized the spirited, as grave markers. The temple began when the famous monk Kukai (774-835 A.D.), who was the founder of Shingon Buddhism, established a temple in this area about 1,200 years ago. Even at the temple’s inception, it stood for the remembrance of the dead as the site of prayers for the departed. About 100 years ago during the Meiji period, there was effort to collect all the stone markers in the area. People placed them in a dedicated space, and they lit candles as an act of worship. At Sai no Kawara, 8,000 stone grave markers stand. There is a festival of candle lighting annually to these lonely spirits at Adashino Nenbutsu-ji Temple. At the Sento Kuyo festival, innumerable candles are lit amidst the grave markers in Sai no Kawara in late August each year for this event, a tradition that came from the Meiji period. Also at the temple is a beautiful bamboo grove pathway that has very few visitors. Finally, the Saga Toriimoto Preserved Street just off of this temple features old traditional Japanese houses called machiya’s. Stay at the Onsen Hotel 'Onyado Nono' near Kyoto Station. Each Onyado Nono boasts its own natural hot spring, and the Kyoto Shichijo branch features the 'Renge no Yu'. The Kyoto branch has a modern decor, but still retains the tatami mats typical of onsen hotels. You need to take off your shoes upon entering, and walking on the tatami mats gives a very Japanese feel. The basic double room is about 17 square meters, not too big or small, just right for one person. The bed is quite comfortable. The room decor is very Japanese, especially the lattice paper windows and the Japanese-style corridors. Every corner has a Japanese-style landscape, which is quite unique. There are quite a few hot spring pools, making it the best companion for relieving fatigue. Soak in the hot spring at night, then have an ice cream and lie down on the massage chair, and you'll be so comfortable that you might fall asleep. I was attracted by the deep corridor when I passed by it unintentionally. It seems to be a shop with riverside seats and sells coffee late at night, which aroused my curiosity to find out more. The name of the shop "so-b" is very special. The wooden porch has a street-house feel. When you go inside, you will see a room full of doll collections. It seems that the boss is a toy collector and a bit of a geek! The old house looks quite nostalgic under the dim light at night. In Kyoto, there is a Blue Bottle Coffee store located in the Kiyamachi area, hidden inside the Takasegawa Hulic Hotel. This store, converted from an old school building with a history of over a hundred years, exudes a strong Taisho era style. Unlike other Blue Bottle stores with modern designs, this one is both retro and elegant, with bright and clean windows, giving it a unique charm. The Kiyamachi store is Blue Bottle's third store in Kyoto. The first store is the famous Nanzenji store, and the second one is the Rokkaku store in the bustling downtown area. The interior space is divided into two areas. The first area you see is the merchandise sales area, which is well-stocked. I bought the classic pair of cups. Moving forward, there is the ordering and dining area, with a warm yellow tone complemented by fresh green plants, creating a very comfortable atmosphere. One of the biggest features of the Kiyamachi store is the large artificial lawn outside the hotel. You can chill out by taking your order to the lawn, sit down, and enjoy it while chatting and admiring the bustling Takasegawa street view. It's very relaxing and highly recommended. The tranquility in Arashiyama was contagious, despite the throngs of tourists everywhere at the red foliage season. At Nison-in Temple, I felt an indescribable sensation when I heard the ringing of its temple belfry. It was more than calmness — the auditory stimulation touched off a spiritual yearning for joy, gratefulness and fulfillment. And then the bell rang again, and then again, and then again. I realized that people were lining up at the belfry to do a prayerful ritual. Indeed, it was the sound from the Bell of Happiness, the sonoric reminder of life’s blessings. The name Nison-in refers to the two revered images that are the resident deities in the Nison-in Temple, with Amida Nyorai on the left and Shaka Nyorai on the right. According to the temple leaflet, Shaka Nyorai “is the one is the one who sends those seeking rebirth in paradise from this side of the world… Amida Nyorai receives them on the other side. The pair represents the beginning and the end of one’s life.” The temple came from the early Heian period, circa 834 A.D., by the order of Emperor Saga. At Nison-in Temple, I found an unlikely gem. Beyond the proper grounds for temple structures, I came upon a cemetery. That was where I felt the most at ease that morning, with a sober respect for the spirited, yet also joyful in celebrating the tranquility that lied before my eyes. A few notable people are buried here at the cemetery of Nison-in. Three emperors were entombed here, Emperor Tsuchimikado, Emperor Go-Saga and Emperor Kameyama. The Mausoleum of Priest Tanku is also inside the temple. I did not see one soul that ventured into this part of the temple. The golden glow of the Kinkaku-ji Temple comes from actual gold leaves plated on the exterior walls of its upper levels. My heart leapt as I saw it luminesce in glory and grace. Meaning “the golden pavilion,” the Kinkaku-ji Temple came from the year 1397, as originally the villa of the powerful statesman Saionji Kintsune. In this year, the Ashikaga shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu purchased this estate from the Saionji family. The Kinkaku-ji was constructed in the year 1399 by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. In accordance with his wish, his son converted it into a Zen temple. This original temple had always been covered in gold leaves. Like so many of Japan’s treasured heritage buildings, Kinkaku-ji Temple suffered from fire destruction. During the Onin War, all of the buildings in the estate were burned down, but Kinkaku-ji was spared. Unfortunately, in 1950, a monk committed arson, resulting in the complete destruction of the Kinkaku-ji Temple, the golden pavilion itself. The current Kinkaku-ji Temple was rebuilt in 1955. To prevent confusion, the Kinkaku-ji Temple has an official name of Rokuon-ji, meaning “deer garden temple.” Needless to say, it acquired the common name of Kinkaku-ji because of its golden pavilion. All of the touring at the Kinkaku-ji Temple are done outdoors. As far as I could remember, there was no entry into the temple itself. I arrived at the time it opened, a little after 9am. Once I entered the garden, I proceeded in a very long queue that took up all of the touring route.
