2024 Kyoto Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in October)
Kyoto is an ancient city with over a thousand years of history. Before the Meiji Emperor moved the capital to Tokyo, it was the traditional home of the Japanese royal family. After thousands of years, from legends of ghosts and gods to history and culture, the air and atmosphere in Kyoto is filled with a great mystical charm. When Kyoto was constructed, its street layout and architecture was influenced by the style of Chang’an, and it still retains the same ancient charm. In the Higashiyama District, temples, shrines and altars embody the spiritual side to Kyoto, while the area around Arashiyama carries a classical and elegant atmosphere. No visit to Kyoto would be complete without a taste of traditional delicacies, a stroll along the flowered paths, or a fascinating geisha show.

Kyoto Daigoji Temple: A Blend of Autumn Leaves and History
This visit to Kyoto's Daigoji Temple coincided with the famous autumn foliage season. In early autumn, the maple trees at Daigoji Temple are adorned with brilliant reds and oranges, creating a beautiful picture.
As a UNESCO World Heritage site, Kyoto's Daigoji Temple was built in 874 AD and is closely linked to Japan's history and culture. Its beauty comes not only from its natural scenery but also from its long history and architectural artistry. It is said that Daigoji Temple had close ties with the imperial family during the Heian period. The emperor of that time often came here for quiet retreats, enjoying the beauty of nature. One autumn, the emperor admired the maple leaves here, feeling deeply moved by their beauty and the changing seasons. Inspired, he composed a poem praising the transformations of nature. This poem has been passed down through the ages, becoming a cherished story of Daigoji Temple.
As we stroll under the maple trees, feeling the tranquility and beauty, it seems as if we have returned to the emperor's era, lost in the poetic and picturesque autumn scenery.
Arashiyama Bamboo Forest
The Arashiyama Bamboo Grove is one of Kyoto’s top sights and for good reason: standing amid these soaring stalks of bamboo is like being in another world.
Tt’s one of the most photographed sights in the city.
But no picture can capture the feeling of standing in the midst of this sprawling bamboo grove – the whole thing has a palpable sense of otherness that is quite unlike that of any normal forest we know of.

Most celebrated temple of Japan - Kiyomizudera
Kiyomizudera (清水寺, literally "Pure Water Temple") is one of the most celebrated temples of Japan.
It was founded in 780 on the site of the Otowa Waterfall in the wooded hills east of Kyoto and derives its name from the fall's waters.
The temple was originally associated with the Hosso sect, one of the oldest schools within Japanese Buddhism, but formed its own Kita Hosso sect in 1965.
In 1994, the temple was added to the list of World Heritage Sites.

A Journey Through Kodaiji Temple's Fall Splendor
#fallcolors #100waysoftravel #japan
Visiting Kodaiji Temple during the autumn season is a breathtaking experience. The vibrant fall colors transform the landscape into a stunning tapestry of reds, oranges, and yellows, perfectly complementing the temple's serene architecture. The contrast of the brilliant foliage against the ancient wooden structures creates a picturesque scene that feels almost ethereal.
Kodaiji Temple, steeped in history and culture, was founded in 1606 by the powerful Hosokawa family. Its beautifully manicured gardens, designed to reflect the changing seasons, are particularly enchanting in autumn. As you stroll through the grounds, the crisp air and rustling leaves enhance the temple's tranquil ambiance.

An Afternoon Shower at Kiyomizu-dera: A Serene Journey
The sudden afternoon shower made us linger a bit longer on the Kiyomizu stage. Listening to the rapid raindrops hitting the umbrella and the hurried footsteps of people seeking shelter under the eaves, it felt like a joyful gathering.
At the same time, the air was filled with the fresh scent of soil and damp leaves. The stone steps became slippery, adding a touch of mystery and tranquility to the ancient temple and the surrounding forest. Watching the wooden structure of the distant temple appear and disappear in the rain, we could quietly appreciate this historical sanctuary, as if time had turned back, allowing us to experience the harmony of this land with ancient Zen practitioners.
After the rain cleared, we walked to Otowa Waterfall, where the sound of the spring water became even clearer, as if the raindrops had washed away the dust of the world. The fresh air carried a hint of sweetness, and the spring water flowed gently between the rocks like a soft melody, a pure gift from nature. It is said that drinking this spring water brings health, wisdom, and longevity. At that moment, we took a sip, feeling its coolness and sweetness, and our hearts were filled with tranquility and gratitude.

When night falls, the temples are shrouded in a veil of mystery, and the serene atmosphere allows you to deeply feel the history and soul of these sacred places.
1. Kiyomizu-dera: The Beauty of Lights
Kiyomizu-dera, one of Kyoto's most famous temples, takes on a completely different appearance when illuminated at night. Sitting alone by the garden, watching the interplay of moonlight and lantern light, is one of the best solo experiences in Kyoto.
3. Tōfuku-ji: A Zen Realm at Night
Tōfuku-ji is famous for its expansive rock garden and Zen-inspired design. At night, the temple is enveloped in tranquility, devoid of daytime hustle and bustle. World record speed trains 🚅
#trainjourney
During my visit to Kyoto, I stumbled upon the Kyoto Railway Museum, and it quickly became one of the highlights of my trip! The entrance fee was around 1,200 yen (about $10), which felt like a bargain for the experience. The museum features a fantastic collection of trains, from vintage steam locomotives to modern Shinkansen, and you can even hop inside some of them! The interactive exhibits were a hit, especially for kids, and I loved learning about the history of rail travel in Japan.
After exploring the museum, I took a stroll through the nearby Umekoji Park, which was lovely for a picnic. If you’re a train enthusiast or just curious about Japan’s railway history, this museum is a must-see!

Kyoto Eikando - A Prime Spot to Enjoy the Charm of Autumn Leaves
Many friends, like me, choose popular spots such as Kiyomizu-dera, Ginkaku-ji, or Togetsukyo Bridge when visiting Kyoto to admire the autumn leaves. However, upon the recommendation of my sister's friend (who has visited Kyoto over ten times), we went to another famous spot for autumn leaves in Kyoto last year - Eikando.
We were very fortunate to visit during the peak week for autumn leaves, and the weather was perfect. Our group of four took a taxi directly to the entrance of Eikando. There were many people there to enjoy the autumn leaves, so if you take a taxi, be prepared to wait patiently in line to get off, but the wait isn't too long. After buying tickets, we entered Eikando, also known as Zenrin-ji. It is said that there are three thousand maple trees inside, which is quite a number. Combined with their Japanese-style design, you can follow their designated route to tour the buildings. Here, you can appreciate their meticulously designed gardens, where every tree, flower, and blade of grass is beautiful. Then, you will see a vast landscape with small bridges, ponds, and mountain views, along with continuous trees, resembling a colorful masterpiece. Many people take photos here, but the visitors are very polite and patient. Finally, you can get a close-up view of the autumn leaves and take photos in their back garden. Every spot here is a perfect photo opportunity, so don't miss it.

Cozy Izakaya in Kyoto 🐙

We recently visited a small, newly opened izakaya in Uzumasa Katsuragicho, Ukyo Ward, Kyoto, and it was such a gem! When we walked in, it was filled with locals, and even though they spoke a little English, the owner was incredibly friendly and welcoming. She helped us place our order, using a translator to communicate, making the experience feel even more personal.
The food was amazing—be sure to try the rice with caviar and the spring rolls with eel and rice. It was the perfect spot to enjoy authentic Japanese dishes in a cozy, local setting.

You still have to walk a long way to get off JR Tofukuji Temple, but the scenery on the roadside is also very beautiful. The scattered maple trees on the roadside are scattered on the ground.
The branches and leaves occasionally exposed in the corner of the wall will pass by a
The small bridge gallery is the beginning of the maple viewing tour from here. In the distance is the overpass, which is the signature point of Dongfu Temple and the best maple viewing spot.
Entering the gate is a sharp contrast between the combination of green leaf ten white stone road + black and white buildings and the red, orange and yellow maple leaf forest seen in the courtyard after buying the ticket. If you want to enjoy maple leaves, you can only buy a package of courtyard ten overpasses:
The overpass is a long maple forest road to a high place. Looking around, it is full of maple leaves. Under the blue sky, more beautiful photos can't show this kind of scenery.

We managed to visit most places, but next time we won't plan such a tight schedule or will add an extra day to avoid rushing. If anyone has a better schedule, please share it with me. Thank you! 😍

My Trip to Kyoto: The Tranquil Beauty of Ginkaku-ji
In my trip to Kyoto, Ginkaku-ji (officially known as Jisho-ji) left a deep impression on me. This 15th-century temple is renowned for its simple and elegant design, which stands in stark contrast to the opulence of Kinkaku-ji. Walking into the garden of Ginkaku-ji, surrounded by lush green trees and clear ponds, felt like stepping into a tranquil paradise.
I strolled around, admiring the exquisite stone garden and moss-covered paths, feeling a sense of calm. Sunlight filtered through the leaves, reflecting on the water's surface, bringing a sense of serenity. The temple's architecture, with its simple wooden structure and intricate details, caught my attention, making me appreciate the aesthetics of traditional Japanese architecture.
