Fushimi Inari-taisha in Kyoto was built in the 8th century and is one of the oldest shrines in Japan. The shrine entrance is marked by a large torii gate donated by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1589, which leads to the main hall and many fox stone statues. Foxes are considered messengers of the Inari gods. The most famous sight is the dense, vermilion "Senbon Torii" behind the shrine, which forms a path to the top of Mount Inari. It is a spectacular and enchanting sight and one of the most representative sights in Kyoto. Fushimi Inari-taisha is open all year round and is free to the public. It is a must-visit when in Kyoto.
