Incredible Minerals and fossils at Shilin

As a geologist this museum was an incredible opportunity to not only learn about the local geology of the stone forest and of Yunnan province but to see some of the most incredible specimens of fossils and minerals from all over China. Some of these mineral specimens and ancient fossils are among the best in the entire world. The statue at the entrance to the museum is a little strange but very impressive. After entering the first room contains many local specimens of karst limestone and calcite cave formations made when water passes over limestone rock, eroding and then reforming it into many unique shapes and patterns. The upstairs room contains the most impressive mineral and fossil specimens from all over China. My favourite part was a selection of different coloured minerals laid out like a table of delicious foods. In the second main exhibition hall there were more minerals and fossils and half the room was filled with large trees and carved pieces of wood of different types. Some were expensive rosewood trees and there was a huge carving of a tiger with natural wood effect all over the top part. If you come to the stone forest you should definitely stop off here even if you dont know much about geology. #passionpassport
