In 55 BC, the Roman army led by Julius Caesar arrived at the Rhine on its way to conquer Gaul and built two bridges leading to the Andernach district of Koblenz today. In 9 BC, Roman consuls settled in the "German Eck" and its surrounding areas at the confluence of the Moselle and Rhine rivers today. However, at this confluence, on the top of a mountain on the opposite side of the Rhine, is the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, which has a longer history. As early as 1000 BC, it was already an early fortification. Today, when visitors visit Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, they may still hear the background sounds that created the sound of cannon fire. For the convenience of tourists, Koblenz also built a cable car over the Rhine River, traveling between the fortress and the German Eck.
