A word about the cover sculpture: On August 31, 1897, this bronze monument was solemnly unveiled by German Emperor Wilhelm I in the presence of German Emperor Wilhelm II. Destroyed by shelling in March 1945, Theodor Heuß reused the riderless plinth in 1953 to commemorate the reunification of Germany. Until 1993, a flagpole with the German federal flag was erected here. In the fall of 1993, the reconstruction of the monument was finally raised on its pedestal. This 37-meter-high monument - 14 meters, by the way, are only the equestrian statue, which showcases the genius of Kaiser Wilhelm I - now attracts more than two million people a year and has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Upper Middle Rhine Valley" since 2002. 🇩🇪
