[Saitama Prefecture] Temple with a worm-eater

Hozenji Temple 𓂃◌𓈒𓐍 𓂃◌𓈒𓐍𓂃◌𓈒𓐍𓂃 Hozenji Temple is located in Saiwai-cho, Kawagoe City. It is a Shinshu Otani-ha temple, and is called Shizenzan Horin-in. It is said that in 1460, the Hoin Ryoo moved the Tonosama temple, which was located in Hikami-gun, Tanba Province, to this area. It is not a tourist spot, but there is a unique stone statue called "Mushiku Iyakko" in the temple grounds. The statue is of a real person named Segawa Kaemon who lived in the Edo period. He served Matsudaira Nobutsuna, the lord of Kawagoe Castle, as a spear-bearer. He was a heavy drinker, and apparently drank every day. Moreover, he would eat anything, including insects, birds, dogs, cats, mice, and snakes, as snacks for his drinks. It is said that in his later years, he had a stonemason make a stone statue of himself and place it here.
