[Nepal] Kathmandu Durbar Square

Since my accommodations were not far from Kathmandu Durbar Square, I inquired about the route after dinner and walked directly there. Kathmandu Durbar Square, also known as "Basantapur Durbar Square," is located in the southern part of Kathmandu's city center and is one of Nepal's historical and cultural symbols. Originally built over 1,300 years ago during the Licchavi dynasty, and subsequently expanded by the Malla and Shah dynasties, the square consists of three open spaces and over 50 ancient buildings and monuments. The most famous building in the square is Hanuman Dhoka. In Nepali, "Durbar" means "royal palace." Historically, Nepalese kings built religious temples around the palace square, and different dynasties continued to add new structures, creating a rich cultural atmosphere and a profound sense of history. The complex within the square includes Kasthamandap, Ashok Binayak Temple, and Kumari Ghar, most of which were built between the 16th and 19th centuries, showcasing the ancient architectural style of the Malla dynasty. Durbar Square at night is filled with a mysterious and tranquil atmosphere. People stroll leisurely in twos and threes, and the ancient temples intertwine with modern lights, forming a captivating scene. I remember the devastating Nepal earthquake of April 25, 2015, which caused severe damage to Durbar Square, destroying many buildings. Today, they have been largely restored. 📝Tips: The entrance fee for Durbar Square is NPR 1,000 (approximately GBP 5.80). Guided tours are also popular and cost NPR 1,000 for 2.5 hours.
