Kalmar Castle (Kalmar Slott)

Known as the “key to the kingdom,” it once protected Sweden’s southeastern coast and played a central role in Scandinavian politics, including the signing of the Kalmar Union in 1397. Walking across the drawbridge and entering the massive stone fortress instantly transported me back in time. Inside, the castle is beautifully preserved with thick stone walls, grand halls, and fascinating exhibitions about medieval life. The sense of history here is palpable — you can almost hear the footsteps of kings, queens, and soldiers who once walked these corridors.
