Yuehe Historic District is a popular leisure area in Jiaxing favored by both tourists and locals. It is adjacent to the World Heritage Site—the Grand Canal of China—and is not only scenic because of the canal but also features a unique spatial layout known as the "Three Rivers and Three Streets." Although the architectural style belongs to the Jiangnan residential system, it differs from that of Suzhou: the indigo tiles here are darker, and the overall atmosphere feels more serene and substantial, unlike Suzhou’s bright and elegant style. Another notable difference is the use of horse-head walls. Houses in the Yuehe district commonly have horse-head walls, an element of Huizhou architecture, which adds a sense of strength and layering to the water town’s landscape, creating a distinctive visual impression. The main street is lined with shops and bustling with crowds, full of the lively energy typical of tourist areas; but once you turn into the sixty-nine winding alleys, the pace suddenly slows down. Many riverside tea houses and cafes are tucked away in these alleys, perfect for sitting quietly and daydreaming, giving the area a more thematic and relaxed feel. I especially like the flower and bird market—various small bonsai and home greenery are displayed in abundance, making it a local favorite market full of warm, everyday charm. Additionally, another touching aspect of the Yuehe district is its rich living atmosphere. On one street, there is an opera stage—not for professional performances but for spontaneous gatherings of nearby residents—some playing instruments, some singing, others sitting around listening. Even if you don’t understand the lyrics, the scene of such natural harmony is enough to move the heart. It’s worth mentioning that the Yuehe Historic District is open to the public for free, with no admission fee required. If you want to experience a historic district that preserves the texture of a water town while being full of life’s warmth, this place is definitely worth a visit.
