Except for 7 households that moved to the village after the founding of the People's Republic of China, all other residents are of the Zhou clan. The Zhou clan has been settled in Shang Gantang Village since before the Song Dynasty, and their lineage has continued to this day. This village is one of the oldest thousand-year-old villages discovered in Hunan Province (second only to Long Village in Daoxian County's Lefutang).
