Spanish Pyrenees Hike ~ Huesca (Region) In Jaca, be sure to visit the castle, a fine example of 16th century military architecture, declared a Historic-Artistic Monument. The castle was built in 1592. Thus, the monument was pentagonal in plan, of imposing size, including a moat, and built on flat ground. There are other very important buildings such as the Romanesque Cathedral (11th century), declared a National Monument, the Benedictine Monastery, the Church of Santiago, the Hermitage of Zalsa, the San Miguel Bridge, the Bell Tower (15th century) and the Town Hall. One of its most important festivals takes place on the first Friday in May and commemorates a medieval battle. There are tournaments, jousting, magnificent processions of standard-bearers, and trials in ancient Aragonese sports such as the bar throw. June 25th is an important day in Haka to celebrate the patron saint’s day.
