#Özkonak Özkonak Underground City is a fascinating subterranean settlement located approximately 14 km northeast of Avanos in Nevşehir Province, within Turkey’s Cappadocia region. Carved into the volcanic slopes of Mt. Idis, this ancient city was designed to provide refuge during times of conflict and invasion.  ⸻ 🏛️ Historical Background The origins of Özkonak Underground City are believed to date back to around the 4th century BCE, with significant expansions occurring during the Byzantine era, particularly in the 6th and 7th centuries CE. Early Christians fleeing persecution utilized and enhanced the city’s structure, adding features such as churches and religious schools. The city remained hidden until 1972 when a local farmer, Latif Acar, discovered it while investigating where his irrigation water was disappearing .   ⸻ 🕳️ Architectural Features • Structure: The city comprises ten levels descending up to 40 meters underground, though only four levels are currently open to visitors .  • Unique Systems: Özkonak features a distinctive pipe communication system that connects different levels, allowing residents to communicate and defend the city during sieges .  • Defensive Mechanisms: The city includes rolling stone doors to seal off passages and small holes above tunnels, possibly used to pour boiling oil or communicate between levels .  • Amenities: Facilities such as wine presses, water wells, and ventilation shafts indicate a well-planned infrastructure to support extended habitation.  ⸻ 📍 Visiting Information • Location: Camii Kebir Mah., Turizm Cad.
