Quanzhou Luoyang Bridge | A Millennium of History and Legend

Song and Yuan China, Maritime Silk Road Quanzhou Luoyang Bridge, formerly known as "Wan'an Bridge", is located at the mouth of the Luoyang River, 10 km east of Quanzhou, Fujian Province. The bridge is 834 meters long and 7 meters wide, with 500 stone railings, 28 stone lions, 9 stone pagodas, 46 piers, and 47 bridge holes, all made of granite. Luoyang Bridge was built by Cai Xiang, a calligrapher and governor of Quanzhou during the Northern Song Dynasty, and took six years to complete. Luoyang Bridge is the earliest existing cross-sea beam stone bridge, known as the "First Bridge in China", and is one of the ancient "Four Famous Bridges". Luoyang Bridge should be in Luoyang, Henan, so why is this bridge named "Luoyang Bridge"? It is said that the Yue people originally lived in the Quanzhou area, and during the Yongjia Rebellion at the end of the Western Jin Dynasty, many aristocratic families moved south to the vicinity of Quanzhou and found that the scenery around the river was somewhat similar to that of the ancient capital of Luoyang, so they named the river Luoyang River. The construction of Luoyang Bridge was extremely difficult, mainly because the Luoyang River is at the mouth of the sea and is deeply eroded by seawater, so the bridge foundation must be particularly strong to prevent erosion by the tide. Luoyang Bridge has many major achievements in bridge construction technology, the most important of which are the "raft foundation" method, the "oyster planting foundation" method, and the "floating suspension frame" method.
