Adorable Kids Visit a High-Quality Japanese Izakaya in Wan Chai The Hopewell Centre in Wan Chai has been renovated and reopened for some time, but I never had the chance to visit until today. Nine adorable kids came to a Japanese izakaya for dinner, and it was quite busy. The izakaya features wooden decor paired with warm yellow lighting, creating a modern yet nostalgic atmosphere, as if you were in the quaint environment of Kyoto, Japan. The prices are reasonable, the food variety is plentiful, and many Japanese patrons visit, which speaks to its quality~ Octopus Salad The octopus is sliced thinly, with a crisp and chewy texture, paired with the chef’s homemade sweet and sour tomato sauce, fresh salmon roe, bonito flakes, and shredded green onions, making it even more appetizing~ Sushi Platter Ten Pieces Ten types of sushi: toro, salmon, squid, botan shrimp, sea urchin, white fish, ark shell—all very fresh and sweet~ A special mention goes to the sea urchin sushi, which still carries the sweet taste of seawater, quite comparable to the quality of tasting it fresh in Japan~ Fried Japanese River Shrimp Fried Japanese river shrimp, also known as crispy fried river shrimp, is a common Japanese dish. It’s simple to make, crispy in texture, and pairs perfectly with sake or beer~ Skewers: Chicken Wings, Chicken Skewers, Beef with Cherry Tomatoes, Zucchini, Grilled Rice Cake The skewers are all cooked to perfection. The grilled chicken wings are crispy on the outside and tender inside. The beef with cherry tomatoes is a simple yet memorable combination~ The biggest surprise is the Japanese grilled rice cake, which is chewy, bouncy, and soft~ Crab Cream Croquettes Japanese crab cream croquettes filled with creamy milk-flavored crab filling, smooth and delicate inside, with a crispy outer layer that’s not too greasy. The potato crust is fragrant and crispy, full of flavor~ Pork and Tofu Stew Japanese soft tofu is tender and delicious, paired with crisp Japanese pork, straw mushrooms, onions, and Japanese soy sauce. The broth is rich, fragrant, and sweet~ Egg and Eel Stone Pot Rice Japanese eel is plump and meaty, the egg is sweet and silky, and there’s plenty of crispy rice crust.
