Hong Kong City Hall: A Forgotten Historical Building with Over 60 Years of History

Central is home to many old buildings, most of which have witnessed the post-war development of Hong Kong. Take Hong Kong City Hall, for example—it boasts over 60 years of history and is Hong Kong's first cultural and recreational facility. The entire complex consists of the main building and the adjacent Memorial Garden, which was built to commemorate Hong Kong soldiers who perished during World War II. The bronze door leading from the garden to City Hall still bears the British royal emblem, serving as a testament to Hong Kong's history. Today, City Hall serves as the main venue for several subsidized arts groups. Whenever I attend a performance, I make it a point to visit the Memorial Garden to admire the bronze door and take in the surrounding skyscrapers, which reflect Hong Kong's significant transformations over the past 60 years.
