Quality @ Fat Tat Char Siu

Hong Kong-style roasted meats are definitely an indispensable delicacy for Hongkongers! I've loved eating them since I was young, especially char siu, which is my comfort food. This time, I went to a fairly famous roasted meat specialty restaurant in Wan Chai to see if it could win my heart. Fat Tat Char Siu in Wan Chai has quite a reputation! It’s a roasted meat specialty shop opened by the owner of the local Feng Shan Private Kitchen. I heard it was very popular, so around 6 PM that day, my dad and I came for dinner. Luckily, the last two seats were available, so we didn’t have to queue. The open kitchen is clearly visible, with roasted goose, char siu, and soy sauce chicken hanging inside. These three are also our favorite roasted meats, so we decided to try them all. The small shop was packed, making sharing tables a common sense! We ordered two bowls of roasted meat rice, each served with a bowl of old fire soup. That day, we got kudzu soup, a thick and rich soup with a fragrant and sweet taste that clearly showed the quality ingredients. Dad chose his favorite roasted goose leg rice for $100. The price is surprisingly reasonable for a goose leg! The roasted goose leg had crispy skin and fragrant meat without being too fatty. The seasoning wasn’t overpowering, allowing the natural flavor of the goose to shine, which I liked. I chose my favorite unbeatable combo: char siu and Maotai soy sauce chicken rice for $80! We both ordered extra rice, but the portions weren’t large! After a few spoonfuls, the rice was all gone. For those with big appetites, it might not be enough. First, I tasted the char siu with slightly charred edges, evenly balanced fat and lean meat, and a distinct bite. The flavor was moderately salty and sweet, perfectly seasoned. If I had to be picky, I’d say it was a bit sticky, but otherwise, this char siu was genuinely good. The Maotai soy sauce chicken was definitely the MVP! The smooth, non-greasy chicken skin carried a full aroma of Maotai and soy sauce. The chicken meat was tender and flavorful, an outstandingly delicious taste. The prices at Fat Tat Char Siu aren’t cheap, but the quality is good, so I think it’s reasonable! The staff cleared tables very diligently but also made me feel a bit pressured. I believe takeout would be a more comfortable way to enjoy the food.
