Echoes of the Past: Exploring Kowloon Walled City’s Storied Legacy

#favouriteitinerary #travelanywhere Our visit to Kowloon Walled City Park was an enchanting journey that bridged centuries of history with tranquil beauty. The park, originally a 15th-century maritime defense station, later evolved into a semi-lawless enclave notorious for its criminal activities. After its demolition in 1994, it was transformed into a lush, serene garden, opening its gates as a public space in 1995. Today, it stands as a peaceful retreat, offering a unique blend of heritage, nature, and reflection. One of the most striking features of the park is the Yamen, the last remaining structure from the Walled City. This building, with its traditional southern Chinese architectural style, serves as a poignant reminder of the area’s past. As we walked through the park, we were drawn to the Old South Gate, a monumental structure that once marked the main entrance to the city. This gate, now a declared monument, was the site of significant archaeological discoveries during the demolition in 1994, including intricately carved granite plaques, paving stones, and even a flagstone path that revealed much about the Walled City's once bustling life. The Six Arts Terrace, a beautifully designed Chinese-style garden, was another highlight. With its harmonious design and peaceful atmosphere, it often hosts traditional Chinese weddings, adding an air of elegance and romance to the park. It was a perfect spot to pause and appreciate the beauty of Chinese garden architecture. We also had the chance to explore "A City of Thousand Faces," an exhibition that opened in 2009. This permanent display offered an insightful look into the Walled City's colorful and tumultuous past, shedding light on the lives of those who once lived in its labyrinthine alleys. The park is a short and easy trip from Lok Fu MTR Station, just a 10-minute walk away. The accessibility of this historical gem, nestled amidst the hustle and bustle of Kowloon, made our experience all the more rewarding. #chinatrip #travel #thingstodo #myitinerary
