I recently discovered that a new Singaporean and Malaysian restaurant has opened in the former Coffee Lane location. I still remember so many memories of my youth there. 🎬 That location wasn't easy to keep busy. The basement entrance is decorated in a simple white setting, and a staircase leads you into a small, intimate world. 🗓 Upstairs, you'll find freshly decorated wooden tables and chairs and a green fabric sofa, creating a natural and down-to-earth feel. The restaurant is self-service, with a pick-up machine for ordering. There's also a cutlery corner and a recycling point at the other entrance. 👍 The staff are all Singaporean and Malaysian. They primarily communicate in English, but they also speak basic Cantonese. Since Singapore and Malaysia are a multi-ethnic country with a significant Chinese immigrant population, Cantonese plays a significant role in the local language. 😚 The menu features homely Singaporean and Malaysian dishes like meen kueh, Hakka yong tau fu, and rojak, which are distinct from the usual bak kut teh, laksa sam sam, and Hainanese chicken rice. 🫓 Dry Mein Kueh | $68 | 7.5/10 Mein Kueh originated in Chaoshan and is a quick-cooking staple food that can be used as a substitute for rice or noodles. They're essentially flat, easy-to-eat dumplings. The sauce, seasoned with soy sauce and oyster sauce, includes mushrooms and stir-fried minced meat 😋, along with fried garlic for a crispy and flavorful texture. 🍝 Minced Meat Noodles | $78 | 7/10 Another Chaoshan staple, introduced by our ancestors after they immigrated to Southeast Asia, minced meat is essentially braised meat. It's served with pork roe, white fish balls, and mushrooms. Be sure to mix it all in with the spicy sauce with dried shrimp on the side ☺ for a satisfyingly spicy bite. And, like at Hong Kong noodle stalls, they serve a bowl of soup to moisten the noodles and prevent them from being too dry. 🧋Black and White | $28 | 7.5/10 It's called "Michael Jackson's Drink" in English, but it's actually soy milk with grass jelly. It's a specialty drink in Singapore and Malaysia. I chose the sugar-free version, and the aroma of soy milk and the coolness of the grass jelly complement each other perfectly. 🫖Honey Monk Fruit | $28 | 7/10 I've been eating a lot of hot food lately for Christmas dinner, and this drink has just the right amount of sweetness to clear away heat and internal heat. Most importantly, it can also help prevent constipation.
