Four exhibition areas integrate innovative technology to create a new experience of appreciating historical buildings
Enjoy the fun of visiting historical sites and feel the essence of aesthetics
The Hong Kong Heritage Discovery Centre is currently hosting the "Virtual and Real Traces - Visiting Ancient Monuments with Cultural Heritage Technology" event. Through innovative cultural heritage technology, nearly 30 distinctive historical buildings in Hong Kong are presented in three dimensions in four exhibition areas, allowing everyone to instantly travel through them and appreciate the aesthetic essence and ingenious structure of historical buildings from virtual reality. You can also take photos with the historical building models using augmented reality technology, and gain knowledge on cultural heritage conservation from the escape room game. It is fun to visit ancient monuments! The exhibition was first held at the end of last year and received rave reviews. It returned this year with great success and its duration has been extended. Everyone can once again immerse themselves in the world of technology and learn about Hong Kong’s historical and conservation-worthy buildings with a different perspective and new experiences. The exhibition is free and will run from now until July 19, becoming a new hotspot for everyone.
"Tracing the Real and Virtual - Exploring Historical Sites with Cultural Relics and Technology" has four major exhibition areas. The first part, "Enjoying the Ancient Buildings through Photography", uses toy bricks to build models of four historical buildings, supplemented by augmented reality technology (AR), allowing visitors to design unique photos with the historical buildings. The second part is a virtual escape room game called "Escape from the Chamber". Visitors are required to use their knowledge of heritage conservation to complete the task within the specified time and "escape" two statutory monuments! In the third section, the “Interactive Heritage Gallery”, visitors can freely choose 3D images and videos of 16 historical buildings in the interactive heritage gallery. By zooming in, out and even rotating the images, they can appreciate the beauty of the historical buildings from different angles. The fourth part, “Black Box of Cultural Relics”, allows visitors to immerse themselves in the virtual reality of four historical buildings, where they can listen carefully to the guided tour and take an in-depth tour in an all-round experience.

Part 1 "Music and Video: Ancient 'Stories'": Toy bricks combined with AR technology to create a new experience
"Fun Photography of Ancient Buildings" selects four historical buildings and uses more than 100,000 toy bricks to make them in three months, including the statutory monuments Hong Kong City Hall, the Islamic Mosque, Lui Seng Chun and the historical building Confucius Lecture Hall. At the same time, combined with AR technology, visitors only need to use their mobile phones or tablets to scan the QR code next to the exhibits, and the components of the building will appear on the screen. Everyone can adjust the size and position of the components on the screen by themselves, and choose their favorite background to easily take a unique photo with the model. It is most suitable for "check-in" people!

To further enrich this exhibition, the Hong Kong Heritage Discovery Centre will also be displaying two newly completed historical building models for everyone to appreciate. They are the Tin Hau Temple in Sai Kung's Joss House Bay, which is the largest of all Tin Hau temples in Hong Kong, and the Old Dairy Company Senior Staff Quarters, both of which are Grade I historic buildings.
The production process of each model is very challenging. It is very difficult to present a 360-degree model due to the limitation of parts and the fact that photos cannot fully capture every detail of the building. Therefore, the production team must visit the relevant historical buildings in person for field investigations in order to present realistic and vivid exhibits.
Also on display are newly completed historical building models: Tin Hau Temple at Joss House Bay, Sai Kung, and the former Dairy Farm senior staff quarters
Part 2 "Escape Room": Exciting escape room game, visit Tung Wah Coffin Home, Bonham Road Government Primary School
"Escape Room" uses a unique escape room game method to lead visitors into historical buildings through AR technology! All you need to do is use the tablets provided on site to scan the corresponding QR codes at different checkpoints, and the different highlights of the historical building will appear on the screen. By moving the tablet in different directions, you can get a full view of that part. While appreciating the historical buildings, visitors also need to pay close attention to the details in order to answer the questions in this level! If you successfully answer five questions in five different locations, you can escape successfully and complete the mission!
The exhibition area is divided into two phases. The first phase is based on the Tung Wah Coffin Home (from now until June 14), and the second phase is based on the Bonham Road Government Primary School (June 16 to July 19). Tung Wah Coffin Home was built in 1899 to arrange burials of Chinese people who died in foreign countries. It was the hub of the global charitable network in the last century. The building combines Chinese and Western architectural features and was listed as a statutory monument in 2020. In addition to its great traditional significance, the Tung Wah Coffin House also carries a certain mysterious quality, which adds an atmosphere of suspense to the game. The Bonham Road Government Primary School, which was declared a statutory monument in 2021, is one of the few remaining buildings of a normal college and tertiary institute that was once used to train teachers. This pre-war school building incorporates many modern architectural styles. Everyone agreed to meet up with three or five close friends to embark on an exciting journey of competing in wits and strength to test their knowledge of cultural relics conservation.

Part III "Interactive Heritage Gallery": 3D images and videos to take a closer look at 16 historical buildings
The "Interactive Heritage Gallery" displays as many as 16 historical buildings, including the former residence of Yip Ting-shi, the Ma Chang Pioneer Memorial, the Tang Clan Ancestral Hall in Ha Tsuen, the University Hall of the University of Hong Kong, the Hung Shing Temple in Ap Lei Chau, etc. Visitors can choose the building they want to learn more about in the gallery and then choose the language, and a brief introduction to the building and related 3D images and videos will appear in front of them. Simply by pointing your fingers in front of the screen, you can zoom in and out of the 3D image, or even rotate the image 360 degrees, so you can get a close look at the features of multiple historical buildings and have fun touring historical buildings!
Historic buildings on display: Former Kowloon British School, Bethany Convent, former Chief Secretary's Residence, Old North District Council House, former Kowloon-Canton Railway Clock Tower, Maryknoll Convent School, King's College, Main Building of the University of Hong Kong, University Hall of the University of Hong Kong, Po Leung Kuk Main Building, St. Mary's Church, Memorial to the Martyrs of the Race Course, Former Residence of Yip Ting-shi, Tang Clan Ancestral Hall in Ha Tsuen, Hung Shing Temple in Ap Lei Chau, Lotus Temple in Tai Hang
Part 4 "Black Box of Cultural Relics": Immersive experience plus audio navigation - VR in-depth tour of four historical buildings
The "Black Box" uses virtual reality (VR) and voice navigation to create an immersive experience for everyone, allowing visitors to take an in-depth tour of four historical buildings, including the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, the main building of Tung Wah Hospital, the Leah Synagogue and the former French Mission Building.
The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception is a Gothic building. Its restoration project in 2002 won an honorary award from the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Cultural Heritage Conservation Award. Completed in 1872, Tung Wah Hospital is the oldest charitable hospital in Hong Kong. The main building of Tung Wah Hospital was rebuilt in 1934 and its auditorium is not open to the public on weekdays. The Leah Synagogue was built in 1902 and has been used for religious purposes ever since its completion and is well preserved. The former French Mission Building was built in 1917 and was declared a monument in 1989.
The exhibition uses technology to dismantle the unique features of each historical building one by one, allowing everyone to carefully appreciate the architectural structures that are difficult to appreciate up close even if they are there in person; at the same time, projection is used to create a combination of historical buildings and filming scenes, suitable for children and adults to immerse themselves in the world of monuments together!
