It was listed as a World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 1991. Now the islands are built into tourist attractions, including museums, churches, restaurants, bars, etc. Construction of Suomenlinna began in 1748, when Finland was part of Sweden. The purpose of its construction was based on the tense situation in the Gulf of Finland and to resist the invasion of the Russians. Therefore, an interconnected defense network was built between the six islands, and a 7.5-kilometer-long granite wall, as well as the most advanced castles and armored rooms at the time were built. In 1808 Russia declared war on Sweden, and in 1809 Finland was ceded to Russia. Therefore, Finland was ruled by Sweden and Russia successively, and did not officially declare independence until 1917. When I visited Finland, it was summer. The warm sunshine brought the temperature up, prompting the small yellow flowers on the small island of Suomenlinna to grow rapidly. Combined with the blue ocean, the entire Suomenlinna looked particularly bright. Strolling on this gorgeous island and visiting the museum converted from former military facilities is such a peaceful and leisurely experience.
