#MarchGoodPlaces2025 The statue of Kazutoyo Yamauchi and his wife is located on a lawn below the Hachiman Castle in Gujo. Kazutoyo Yamauchi was a military commander during the Azuchi-Momoyama period and the early Edo period of the Japanese Warring States Period. His career flourished after he married a virtuous wife. Chiyo was not only good at needlework but also good at writing. Legend has it that when Yamanouchi Kazutoyo was still a low-ranking samurai, he fell in love with a horse but had no money to buy it. When his wife Chiyo learned about it, she privately pawned her dowry to buy the horse. Later, Yamanouchi Kazutoyo was appreciated by his lord Oda Nobunaga for his meritorious service in battles riding this horse and thus rose to prominence.
