#AprilGoodDestinations2025 The Florence landmark "David" is a nude male statue created by the Renaissance master Michelangelo from 1501 to 1504 using white marble. It is 5.17 meters tall and weighs 6 tons. The prototype is the Jewish hero King David in the Bible. On the eve of its completion in 1504, Florence discussed placing it on the top floor of the church, but because the statue was too shocking, it was finally located at the entrance of the Old Palace of the Town Hall. In 1873, in order to protect the original, the statue was moved to the Gallery of the Florence Academy of Fine Arts for collection, and a replica was erected at the original site in 1910. Today, there are three statues of David on display to the public in Florence: the original in the Academy of Fine Arts Gallery, the bronze version in the center of Piazzale Michelangelo, and the stone replica in front of the main entrance to the Town Hall.
