Medici Chapel - A magnificent stone sanctuary

It's worth it! / The Medici Chapels (Cappelle medicee) are two extensions of the Basilica of San Lorenzo in Florence, Italy. They were built in the 16th and 17th centuries for the Medici family, the Grand Duke of Tuscany. The New Sacristy (Sagrestia Nuova) was designed by Michelangelo. The larger Cappella dei Principi was built in the early 17th century to a design by the family and the architect. / The new vestry next to the main hall has two seated and four reclining statues The four statues were designed by Michelangelo for the tombs of the Medici family members, named "Night", "Day", "Morning" and "Evening" after the four periods of the day / Although the new vestry was completed in 1524, its ambitious sculpture project was interrupted by many events, such as the temporary exile of the Medici family (1527), the death of Clement VII and Michelangelo's departure from Florence for Rome (1534), which meant that Michelangelo was unable to complete the entire work.
