Fengyu Inkstone, the source of Erhai Lake Legend has it that a feather dropped by a phoenix turned into this ancient town, hence the name Fengyu. Xu Xiake (January 5, 1587–March 8, 1641), a geographer, traveler, explorer, and writer of the Ming Dynasty, once visited Fengyu. In the 36th year of the Wanli period (1608), 21-year-old Xu Xiake officially set out on his travels. Due to long journeys, Xu Xiake suffered from a serious foot disease and was unable to walk when he arrived in Yunnan. On the first day of the third month of the 12th year of the Chongzhen period (1639), recommended by his close friend He Mingfeng, Xu Xiake came to Eryuan from Jiangyin. Early in the morning, Xu Xiake bid farewell to He Mingfeng at Huming Temple in Eryuan, and was amazed by the beautiful scenery of Fengyu Ba. On the second day, he visited Luoping Sixteen Peaks, Xishan, Xiangbi Ridge, Dishan Mountain, and Diaoshan Mountain. On the third day, he visited Luoping Mountain and Qingyuan Cave. On the fourth day, he went to Podayi, the second largest village in Fengyu, and Tiejia Field. On the fifth day, he went to Dishan Mountain with Tusi Yin to pay respects to their ancestors. ... On the eighth day, he bid farewell and left Fengyu. ... For more than 400 years, Fengyu has been producing the famous Fengyu Inkstone, which began in the late Yuan and early Ming Dynasties. Fengyu Inkstone is easy to grind ink, with a deep luster, good water retention, and ink that does not rot. The ink ground is smooth and shiny. It was once recommended as a famous inkstone by the Chinese Calligraphy and Painting Newspaper. Fengyu Inkstone is made from the stone from the north foot of Diaoshan Mountain in Fengyu, which is shady. The stone is soft and delicate, with high water saturation. The ink is pure black, and the stone is soft, known as ink stone. The inkstone cover is tight and can be compared with the four famous inkstones in China. The production process of Fengyu Inkstone is one of the top ten intangible cultural heritage skills in Yunnan. Fengyu Inkstone has high practical and artistic value.
