Enshi Tusi City

Enshi Tusi City was built in 1998 and is the largest newly built Tusi City in China. It preserves the memory of the Tusi culture that lasted for more than 450 years from the Yuan Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty. In fact, from the Yuan Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty, there were many large and small Tusi and Tusi castles in the vast areas from Guizhou to western Hunan to western Hubei. This was a way for the imperial court to implement autonomous rule in ethnic minority areas. The Tusi in various places were actually the local emperors. The Tusi had great power, and it is said that many Tusi had the right to the first night of newlywed girls in their jurisdiction. It was not until the 13th year of the Yongzheng reign of the Qing Dynasty that the "Gaitu Guiliu" policy was implemented, and the Tusi system was officially ended.
