Historical Market Square Route Recommendations

Pont de Suert holds significant historical importance. Built during the height of the Middle Ages, its historic center features walls and buildings that reflect the unique appearance and characteristics shaped by the Pyrenees. At Plaza del Mercadal, you'll find arcades on only one side, adorned with decorative elements reminiscent of the ancient Santa Maria de Lavaix Monastery. Another must-visit spot is the main square, overlooked by the Town Hall, which dates back to the 18th century. The beautiful Calle Mayor begins here, a street entirely composed of arcaded walkways. Among the large houses lining the street, the facades of Ca de Jaumot and el Segretari stand out the most. Many streets and squares feature arcades designed to protect commercial activities from harsh weather conditions. By the riverside stands the Monastery Palace, once the residence of the abbot of Lavaix Monastery. This grand 15th-century Gothic civil building underwent extensive renovations, with its tall tower now serving as the bell tower of the old church. The church itself was built in Romanesque style and underwent a complete transformation during the Baroque period. It features a Latin cross floor plan with three naves and a transept, and it currently houses religious artworks from La Ribagorça.
