### Tips for Traveling to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah Are you traveling solo, with family, or for business? Each type of trip comes with its own expectations. Understanding your goals and desires will lead to a more fulfilling experience. These tips have worked well for me, but I welcome any ideas you’d like to share! I typically travel either alone or with my two teenage daughters, so my go-to tips are as follows: 1. Pack Light 2. Sunblock is Essential Here are my tips: 1. Plan Your Accommodation 2. Explore Local Cuisine - Try local dishes like Nasi Lemak, Nasi Goreng, Satay, Ikan Bakar (grilled fish), and fresh seafood. Visit local markets for authentic street food experiences. 3. Visit the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park - Take a boat trip to the nearby islands for snorkeling, swimming, or just relaxing on the beach. It’s a great way to enjoy nature and meet fellow travelers. 4. Hike Mount Kinabalu - If you’re up for an adventure, consider hiking Mount Kinabalu. Make sure to book in advance, as permits can sell out quickly. 5. Respect Local Culture - Be mindful of local customs and dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites. 6. Stay Connected - Get a local SIM card (CELCOMDIGI is my preferred provider) for internet access. This will help you navigate and stay in touch with friends and family. 7. Use Public Transport - Familiarize yourself with local transport options. Here the Grab is very popular, but Maxim is half the price of Grab. Make sure you download this APP before your trip. 8. Join Group Tours - Consider joining group tours for activities like diving, wildlife spotting, or cultural experiences. 9. **Stay Safe** - Keep your belongings secure and be cautious when exploring at night. Trust your instincts and avoid risky situations. NEVER offer money to children at the street, they’re not local kids, those are illegal immigrants from Philippines. It’s a syndicate, once you offer to one kid, few minutes later will me a bunch of them coming to you. 10. Make an Itinerary - While spontaneity is great, having a rough itinerary can help you cover significant attractions like the Sabah State Museum, Signal Hill Observatory, and local markets. 11. Learn Basic Malay Phrases - Knowing a few phrases can enhance your interactions with locals and show respect for their culture. 12. Take Time to Relax - Don’t forget to take breaks and enjoy the serene environment. A solo/family trip is also about self-care and reflection. With these tips, you’ll be well-prepared for a memorable solo trip to Kota Kinabalu!#travel #sabah
