Telegraph Cove

#mytraveldiary Telegraph Cove is a small community (≈ 20 permanent residents) on the northeast coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. It sits on Johnstone Strait, near Robson Bight Ecological Reserve (famous for the orca rubbing beaches). Originally a sawmill & cannery village, it was also the northern terminus of the telegraph line from Campbell River built in 1911-12. The village name comes from its telegraph station (1911-12) — part of communications expansion in that era. Much of the historic village is built on wooden pilings and connected by a boardwalk over the water. Many original or restored buildings are heritage cabins, general store, etc. In Dec 2024 there was a large fire that destroyed a portion of the boardwalk and several historic buildings (pub, restaurant, Whale Interpretive Centre, etc.). Rebuilding is underway.
