A hidden wonder of art underground #St. Spas Church - Skopje North Macedonia

#September2025 Tucked away in the Old Bazaar of Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia, lies an unassuming, almost invisible, building: St. Spas Church. With its unique topography, rich history, and breathtaking interior art, it's one of Skopje's must-see cultural treasures. Built in the 18th century, when North Macedonia was still under Ottoman rule, the church's designers built most of the structure underground, leaving only the roof slightly above ground level. This makes the church appear small and unassuming from the outside, a stark contrast to the surrounding mosques and towering buildings. Despite its plain exterior, step inside and you'll be struck by its ornate and intricate interior, particularly the world-famous carved wooden altar (iconostasis). This altar was meticulously carved by the Mijak family, renowned woodcarvers from the Debar region, over a period of nearly ten years (1819-1824). Made of walnut, it stretches 10 meters long and 6 meters high, and features intricate carvings. The carvings encompass a wide range of subjects, from biblical stories to flora and fauna, everyday scenes, and even mythical creatures. With unparalleled patience and skill, the artists intertwined these elements to create an artistic world brimming with vitality and religious meaning. Beyond its artistic value, the Church of St. Sebastian also holds significant historical significance. Within its courtyard lies the tomb of Göce Delčev, a North Macedonian national hero and a key leader of the Macedonian national liberation movement in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
