The Papal Gardens in Avignon

The Palais des Papes (Palace of the Popes) is the main historical and architectural landmark of Avignon, serving as the residence of the Roman popes in the 14th century and the largest Gothic building in the world. The Papal Gardens are an inner courtyard at the foot of the palace walls. We spent about half an hour here, strolling, admiring the plants, and marveling at the grandeur of the palace. The gardens feature olive trees, potted lemon trees, vegetable crops, and a variety of Provençal herbs: rosemary, lavender, thyme, sage, and oregano. We purchased tickets on-site and chose the €17 option, which also included access to the Papal Gardens and the Saint-Bénézet Bridge. Entry to just the palace grounds for an adult costs €12.
