Into the Middle Ages: Palais des Papes in Avignon

Initially, I visited this city without much expectation. It was just a stopover before heading to other cities in southern France. As a history enthusiast, I booked my accommodation with only the 'Avignon Papacy' in mind. However, after seeing the Palais des Papes, this place became a 'city that lingers in my memory.' ❗️Note! If you're taking a bus from the train station to the city center, you'll need cash. The city left a strong impression from the very beginning. Surrounded by solid medieval walls, Avignon felt like a blend of a medieval town with a touch of modernity. The entire city seemed like a massive museum where the past and present coexist. At the heart of it all is the Palais des Papes. Compared to other European cathedrals or castles, its state of preservation is remarkable. It’s not ornate, but it exudes a 'rugged grandeur' that photos simply cannot capture. Seeing it in person was a completely different experience. 📖 The interior is filled with exhibitions about the architectural history and historical significance of the palace. The building is larger than expected, making it worth a slow exploration for those who love history or architecture. The entrance fee was €13.5, and I felt it was well worth it. Most importantly, this palace was the center of the 'Avignon Papacy'! From 1309 for about 70 years, the Pope moved from Rome to Avignon, marking a period symbolizing the decline of papal authority. Reflecting on this history while looking at the building again, the aged and rough walls seemed to vividly reveal the story of that downfall. A city too captivating to rush through in half a day... Avignon is best enjoyed at a leisurely pace over a full day. If you have the time, make sure to stop by on your way.
