Atami | A shopping street that inherited the name of Ginza, popular even today during the Edo period, and featuring a hand bath.

While most hot spring resorts are aging and struggling with declining tourist numbers, Atami has bucked the trend and grown into a favorite resort destination for Tokyo residents. From international tour groups to independent travelers, Atami has gradually transitioned to a more refined tourism scene, steadily cultivating the tourism market over the past decade. Ginza and Heiwa-dori shopping streets in front of the station are also popular destinations. Dating back to the Edo period, hot springs formed a commercial settlement. During the Showa bubble economy, Atami experienced rapid development due to the influx of tour groups. Today, these old Showa-style buildings, a fusion of old and new, are a popular destination for young people. While walking through the shopping district, you might miss the Fukufuku Hand Bath, which springs up from 300 meters underground and is adjusted to around 40 degrees Celsius. Next to it is a charming statue of Jizo Bodhisattva. A few famous shops are also listed: 👍Atami Pudding: This is a popular shop with a long-standing queue. The pudding has a chewy texture and isn't overly sweet. 👍Yaichi-an Red Bean Bread, a popular item that's sold over a million units. It's filled with butter and red beans, and bursts when you bite into it. 👍Maruta's Japanese-style sweet and sour rice is a must-try if you're craving something savory. 👍Furuya Western Cuisine, a Western-style restaurant steeped in Showa tradition. Seating is limited, so be prepared for long lines. The Atami Fireworks Festival, which began in 1952, is now a year-round event, with 17 scheduled for 2025.
