Danakil Depression – “Earth’s Hottest, Strangest Landscape”

I joined a 3-day guided expedition, and it felt like Mars. We visited Dallol, where neon-colored pools bubble from the earth, and climbed Erta Ale, an active volcano with a boiling lava lake. The heat was intense—often over 45°C—but the scenery made it worthwhile. The Afar people still harvest salt by hand, using camel caravans to transport it across the desert.
