China's Most Magical Ancient Bridge: Burning Bridges
In the ancient city of Chaozhou, there is a bridge with a thousand-year history called Guangji Bridge😜. This is the real-life version of burning bridges, and it is one of China's four famous ancient bridges, along with Zhaozhou Bridge in Hebei, Luoyang Bridge in Quanzhou, and Lugou Bridge in Beijing👏. It looks like a beautiful long rainbow lying across the Han River, opening and closing for over 800 years, standing firm like a loyal old friend, witnessing the changes of time😃.
Stepping onto Guangji Bridge, the stone slabs underfoot seem to whisper to me, telling stories of the past. The marks on the stone slabs, worn by time, seem to record the footsteps of many people from ancient times to the present, carrying their various emotions—joyful, sad, happy, and sorrowful😔. Each stone slab is like a thick old book, inscribed with stories of time, some filled with vicissitudes, others with glory🌟. A gentle breeze blows, the river surface shimmering, complementing the bridge, creating an incredibly beautiful picture🤩

| Recommended by locals. Chaozhou 2 Days 1 Night Guide | Recommended by locals❗️Must see
When it comes to Chaozhou, I start drooling, and after craving for a long time, we finally set off!
1️⃣Transportation
Departing from Shanghai to Jieyang Airport, our itinerary was to first go to Nan'ao Island, then to Shantou and finally to wander and eat in Chaozhou.
Shantou➡️Chaozhou: You can choose to take a taxi, about 50 minutes; or you can take a bus, 28 yuan per ticket, which can be purchased in advance on the 'Chaozhou Yueyun' official WeChat account.
2️⃣Accommodation
For accommodation, we chose the hotel 'Seclusion', about 1 kilometer away from Chaozhou ancient city🏛️. The distance is just right, because being too close to the ancient city can be a bit noisy, and it's inconvenient to take a taxi🚗 on the pedestrian streets, while being too far is not convenient for traveling and sightseeing.
The hotel we stayed in is very artistic, with simple and mixed decorations that include technology style, equipped with automatic curtains🪟, bathtubs🛀, and screen projection, warm, comfortable, and convenient.
3️⃣Attractions
When visiting Chaozhou, you absolutely cannot miss these places!
The first stop is Kaiyuan Temple, a thousand-year-old temple with thriving incense, where every corner is permeated with a sense of historical weight, inspiring awe. We found the famous check-in spot 'Destined Kaiyuan' and posed for half a day.
Then we walked to Paifang Street, which seems to transport you back to ancient Chaozhou, with antique buildings and various archways that are too many to take in at once. Taking photos📷 and checking in is definitely a hit on the friend circle🟢. We went there on a Saturday, and it was quite crowded; it should be better on weekdays.
Don't forget to visit Zhenhai Tower🏠, the tallest building in Chaozhou. Standing on the tower, you can see the beautiful scenery of the entire city, an absolute visual treat!
Guangji Tower and Guangji Bridge🌉 are also must-visit spots. Guangji Tower is simple and elegant, a symbolic building of Chaozhou ancient city; Guangji Bridge is a magical ancient bridge that combines beam, pontoon, and arch bridges.
4️⃣Food
How can you miss these authentic snacks🫕 when playing in Chaozhou? Recommended by locals, not to be missed.
Guantang Chao Fu Chen Beef🥩 Hotpot: A decade-old brand, with its own slaughterhouse in Guantang, the beef is fresh and juicy, perfect after boiling for eight seconds, and even better when dipped in satay sauce, simply delicious!
Linghai Fish Raw🐟 Stall • Braised Goose with White Porridge: Chaozhou fish raw is second to none. The fish slices🍥 are as thin as cicada wings, crystal clear, paired with a special sauce, they melt in your mouth, incredibly fresh. We heard before coming that we couldn't miss the raw pickled hasma, and it was indeed a rare delicacy, with a smooth texture and delicious taste that is irresistible.
Traditional Desserts·Chaozhou Handmade Sweet Soup (Paifang Street Store): You must try Chaozhou sweet soup, Yangzhi Ganlu🍨, refreshing and delicious; the special coconut milk taro duck mother twist, with dense and delicate taro, rich and creamy coconut milk, a rich taste that lingers on and on;
Old Movie Theater Uncle's Braised Goose🦢 (Zhenhai Tower Store): Lion head goose platter, the goose wings are full and juicy, each bite seems to bite into the perfect blend of fresh meat and marinade; the goose meat is fresh and not greasy, melts in your mouth, leaving a lasting impression.
There are also fermented tofu chicken wings🍗, fermented tofu cakes, sugar onion bobbing🍕, kuih juice and so many more, Chaozhou is really too delicious, my 256G stomach can't hold it anymore!
brianna_likes_acetylcholine A spontaneous trip to Chaozhou, a two-day and one-night guide
Taking advantage of the weekend, on a whim, I decided to go on a spontaneous trip. Destination - Chaozhou.
·
🚄About transportation: It's really convenient to travel from Xiamen to Chaozhou. The high-speed train goes directly to Chaoshan Station, taking just over an hour, and there are many trains available. Once you arrive at Chaoshan Station, you can take the K2 line, a direct bus, or a taxi to the ancient city. After arriving in the ancient city, it is recommended to rent a small electric scooter, which is really convenient. Make sure to rent a small one that you can ride directly into Paifang Street.
·
🚶About the route: Chaozhou West Lake - Xima Road - Paifang Street - Kaiyuan Temple - Guangji Tower - Guangji Bridge - Han Wen Gong Temple
1️⃣Chaozhou West Lake: A poetic and picturesque garden park.
2️⃣Xima Road: This hundred-meter-long old street can satisfy your food cravings. Both sides are lined with dense arcades, offering a variety of snacks.
3️⃣Paifang Street: The most bustling ancient street, featuring 22 Ming and Qing dynasty-style archways and Nanyang-style arcades.
4️⃣Kaiyuan Temple: Known as the 'First Ancient Temple in Eastern Guangdong,' it is simple, grand, solemn, and serene.
5️⃣Guangji Tower and Guangji Bridge: A three-story palace-style pavilion with a hip-and-gable roof, separated from Guangji Bridge by a road. Guangji Bridge is the world's earliest opening and closing bridge. When night falls and the lights come on, it becomes even more spectacular.
6️⃣Han Wen Gong Temple: A temple commemorating the Tang Dynasty writer Han Yu. You can climb to the top to see the scenery of the Han River.
·
🥘About food and drink:
✔️Shangxi Goose Feast: It is said that this restaurant originally operated in a market stall for over 30 years and has now moved to the residential area outside Paifang Street. The prices are clearly marked, and many locals come to buy as well.
✔️Guantang Chao Mansion Chen Beef Hotpot: How can you visit Chaoshan without eating beef hotpot? This beef hotpot restaurant is located next to Paifang Street and was recommended by a local friend. It has been open for more than ten years and has its own slaughterhouse, so the quality of the beef is guaranteed.
✔️Guantang Fresh Fish Sashimi: Located next to the residential area, the ingredients are freshly killed and prepared, very fresh. Once you try it, you'll get addicted! It's so delicious that you'll want to drink all the soup so good.
✔️Mengchen Phoenix Dancong Teahouse: When visiting Chaozhou, you can't miss the local Kung Fu tea culture. While wandering around, I discovered this Mengchen Phoenix Dancong Teahouse on Zhongshan Road. The whole environment is quiet and elegant, perfect for a tea break.
✔️Shuangsheng Rice Noodles: This is the only one, and it's very popular. I ordered a large portion of beef rice noodles, which had a lot of tender beef. Paired with Chaozhou's unique satay sauce and peanut sauce, it's really different and delicious compared to Cantonese rice noodles!
·
🏠About accommodation: I chose the Shiji Hotel by West Lake. The hotel just opened this year, so the equipment and facilities are very new. The rooms are also very clean and tidy, and most importantly, the location is great.
After returning from Chaoshan, to be honest, I really suggest watching it before you go

Chaozhou Ancient City | Why didn't anyone tell me before that Chaozhou is so photogenic!!
⛩️ The ancient city of Chaozhou is not big, but it really is a great place to take photos!! I ran out of phone storage because of all the pictures I took Who understands!!
📷 Here are a few spots that you must check out and the best angles to take pictures from –
(Guangji Tower)
Don't miss out on Guangji Tower at night!! The night view of Guangji Tower is so beautiful that you can take pictures randomly and they will still look good!! The best spot to take pictures of Guangji Tower at night is across the street! Your face won't be dark in the photos, and using a flash will make them look even better~ During the day, you can go up the stairs next to Guangji Tower, this spot is less crowded and also produces great photos~ You can also catch the sunset in the evening!! Another good spot is from Paifang Street, it's also picturesque, but there are more people, so you need to take pictures from a low angle to avoid the crowd –
(Guangji Bridge)
I missed the entry time when I went, so I could only take pictures from outside! Every day at five o'clock, there is a scene of 'crossing the river by dismantling the bridge', and there is a light show at night~ Standing by the bridge at night to take pictures is also quite nice –
(Chaozhou)
Navigate to 'Yuan Dan Jiu Liao' to get here, it's a red wall in an alley, the environment is a bit simple, but the pictures turn out quite well –
(Paifang Street)
Paifang Street is really suitable for street photography!! Along the street, there are local snacks that are delicious and fun to explore~ The 23 archways tell of Chaozhou's historical achievements!

Chaozhou Three-Day Two-Night Food and Sightseeing Guide (Part 1)
I've longed to visit Chaozhou, and I finally managed to arrange the trip✈️
Although three days and two nights is not a lot of time, I was able to satisfy my cravings and sightseeing desires😌. The only downside was the weather; it was overcast and rainy☔️. Weather really does play an important role when going out to have fun~
🚘Transportation: Day one Nanjing✈️Jieyang🚕Shantou
Day two Shantou chartered car tour around Nan'ao Island, circling the island, then off to Chaozhou
Day three Chaozhou🚕Jieyang✈️Nanjing
🏨Accommodation: Shantou——Junhua Haiyi Hotel, just a five-minute walk to Longyan South Road, convenient for ordering takeout, with butler service in the hotel, which is quite considerate. However, the hotel is clearly dated, with older facilities.
Chaozhou——Tengrui Crown Hotel, quite new, we stayed on the 38th floor with a nice view, the room environment and facilities were great~ The service was okay, not as considerate as the butler service in Shantou.
🎈Fun: Shantou——Strolled around the Little Park and Shantou Travel Agency, quite leisurely, good for taking photos, but the ferry ride back and forth didn't seem very interesting.
Nan'ao Island——The chartered driver took us around for a check-in tour, there are many scenic spots, but unfortunately the weather was bad, so we just took photos for check-in. Nan'ao Island's beaches are nice, we could bring kids here in the future and stay on the island for a night.
Chaozhou——Hanwen Gongci and Guangji Bridge are worth visiting, they have a strong sense of history and are close to each other, the light show on Guangji Bridge is quite stunning! Paifang Street is full of merchants, similar to Nanjing's Laomendong
😊Chaozhou is really delicious, with historical sites, culture, and natural scenery. Next time, I'll wait for good weather and come to play again👋
This hotel in Chaozhou is such a hidden gem!!
I'm not dreaming for real

Checking in at the Shallow Alley Homestay in Chaozhou Ancient City.
In the ancient city of Shantou, there are many small hotels that have been converted from their own old houses into homestays. This time, I passed by a shallow alley homestay and went in for a visit.
The location of the homestay is good, very close to Paifang Street, with 3 floors. According to the owner, this homestay has about 5 rooms, including large bed rooms, twin rooms, and small suites. The twin room I visited this time is not very large, about 18 square meters, with two single beds and a private bathroom. Although the area is relatively small, it is still clean and hygienic.
The price of the homestay is also not expensive, about 200 yuan per night, which is more suitable for friends with a limited budget. Since the homestay is inside the ancient city, it is convenient to go to various attractions in the ancient city. What do you guys think?
😊😊Membership benefits: As a loyal fan of Trip.com, I have used customer service support, and there will be specialists online to answer various questions you encounter during the booking process, and the service experience is good😇.

📅My itinerary
Day 1⃣️: Chaozhou Ancient City - Paifang Street - Kaiyuan Temple - Xiangzi Bridge
Day 2⃣️: Chen Cizao's Former Residence - Zaiyang Teahouse
Day 3⃣️: Longhu Ancient Town - Return
-
🏯Attractions Introduction:
1⃣️Chaozhou Ancient City: There are many alleys in the ancient city that are very lively, many small shops are very exquisite and suitable for check-in, you can discover it slowly.
2⃣️Paifang Street: Actually, it is the main street of Chaozhou Ancient City, which is more commercial, just stroll around.
3⃣️Kaiyuan Temple: An ancient and elegant temple, the eaves bell is really beautiful, don't miss the lucky bags and oil paper lantern walls in the temple.
4⃣️Xiangzi Bridge: The legendary bridge crossing the river, it looks good with aerial photography. If you don't have aerial photography, you can look at it on the city wall or on the shore. Tickets are required to go up the bridge.
5⃣️Chen Cizao's Former Residence: The former residence of overseas Chinese, it's really beautiful for taking pictures. This place actually belongs to Shantou, and tickets are required. Here you can see the process of making oil paper lanterns.
6⃣️Zaiyang Teahouse: Pros and cons, personal choice. The main thing is that the cost performance is not high, but the environment is good.
7⃣️Longhu Ancient Town: Compared with the ancient city, I prefer it here. The atmosphere here is more lively and simple, and there are many very good coffee shops and teahouses.
-
🏨Accommodation recommendation: Don't live in the ancient city, firstly, the traffic is inconvenient, and it is difficult to carry luggage. Secondly, it is noisy in the ancient city, and the homestay rooms are also small. It is recommended to live in the new city area, a 15-minute journey, very convenient.
-
🍜Food recommendation: Beef Kway Teow, Beef Hot Pot, Kway Juice, Oil Gan Juice, Chaoshan Fresh Pickles, Fish Raw Duck Shit Fragrant Lemon Tea, don't miss these, you really have to taste. A food guide will be out later!
-
🚌Traffic recommendation: Chaozhou transportation is very convenient, high-speed rail can be done to Chaoshan Station, the airport is Jieyang Airport, it is more than half an hour's journey to the ancient city. It is not recommended to drive in the Chaozhou Ancient City, it is too congested, you can take a taxi.
Hidden in the Chaozhou Paifang Street scenic area is a paradise away from the world
In a place far from the hustle and bustle of the city, there is a space where you can enjoy slow time. The location is within the Paifang Street scenic area, and it is very convenient to go out for food, drink, and fun.
You can walk to major attractions such as Guangji Bridge, Kaiyuan Temple, and Zhenhai Tower.
The courtyard is equipped with a wealth of facilities:
There is a tea room available for team building and meetings. Constant temperature bath, large living room tea table, mahjong, washing machine, refrigerator, kitchen, clothes drying rack, swing, outdoor viewing platform, greatly meet the needs of team building, parent-child travel, etc.
Entering the courtyard, a spacious free activity space and a warm and atmospheric Chinese courtyard are presented. No one disturbs the independent courtyard, independent doors and households, safe and comfortable. Living here and taking pictures, also knocking out the film. Beautiful scenery plus beautiful women, the main thing is to play well and live better.
The rooms have a wide view, and each room is equipped with an independent bathroom. One room for one, not competing with each other. 24-hour hot water does not stop, the room is full of selected daily necessities, hair dryer, slippers, toothpaste and toothbrush, shampoo, shower gel are all equipped to ensure the quality of life for travel.
The breakfast for the stay is equipped with Chaozhou special sausage rice noodles, and the scenic spot is just outside the door, and you can quickly return to the homestay after shopping. The homestay is also very quiet at night, sleep a good night's sleep, and play with energy the next day.
An ancient bridge in Guangdong has become popular, it is open during the day and splits into two at night
The scenes of relatives leaving and lovers separating often occur at the ferry crossing by the bridge. Standing at the head of the bridge, seeing the separation of relatives, it is inevitable to feel a sense of sorrow, and these strands of sorrow and bits of resentment have been transformed into beautiful texts and magnificent poems by literati, which are recited by people and add an artistic atmosphere to these ancient bridges. Today, let's walk into the Guangji Bridge, located opposite the Guangjimen City Tower on Huancheng East Road in Xiangqiao District, Chaozhou City, Guangdong Province, and see what different sceneries there are here. Although there are many similar ancient bridges in our country, the Guangji Bridge hidden in Guangdong is open during the day and splits into two at night, opening and closing for more than 800 years! Guangji Bridge, commonly known as Xiangzi Bridge, was built in the seventh year of Song Qiandao (1171 AD) and has a long history. Not only that, but it is also worth mentioning that it is also known as one of the 'Four Ancient Bridges of China' along with Zhaozhou Bridge, Luoyang Bridge, and Lugou Bridge. The surface of the Guangji Bridge is antique, the bridge spans the Han River, and combines beam bridges, arch bridges, and pontoon bridges into one, with a very special structure, which can be called a unique example in the history of bridges in our country.
Chaozhou Ancient City
Arrive at Chaoshan Station by high-speed rail, and take the K2 bus directly to Chaozhou Ancient City. The biggest feeling when you arrive in Chaozhou is that your stomach is not enough. Sashimi, pickles, clay pot porridge, rice noodles, beef hot pot, braised goose, herbal tea, it feels like it can't be arranged all at once. Even for eating, you have to stay at least two days, and you have to count the late-night snacks. Guangji Bridge is the focus of the trip to Chaozhou. The history of the bridge is needless to say. In order to understand the opening and closing of the bridge and the overall view in detail, you first need to take a long view on the Hanjiang Bridge. Choose the time before nine in the morning, at this time the bridge is not connected. After nine o'clock, the workers start to use the tugboat to drag the three floating boats docked on the side of the Han River to the center for connection. The process is very fast and it takes about 15 minutes to connect. After five o'clock in the evening, the floating boats are disassembled and towed to one side to dock. There is a light show at eight o'clock in the evening, the lights are very bright, which complements the majesty of Guangji Bridge.
Chaoshan Ancient City
Chaoshan Ancient City. What can I say about this amazing area of Chaoshan. The streets blooming with business. Lots of shops to buy souvenirs and cultural artifacts. The street food, the best! Delicious street food to fill your stomach! Let’s not forget the delicious drinks being sold on, traditional drinks for you to try. This area is the best place to be. Lots to do and lots to see. Head out there during the nighttime. You will love every second of it. #newyearadventure
Guang Ji Bridge
The Guang Ji Bridge in Han Jiang River. Another location to venture to. The Guangji bridge is a magnificent sight. The bridge is a fun place to take pictures and see the beauty of the Han Jiang River. The fun part of the bridge is the boat crossing. Hold on tight! Haha. The bridge was built to help merchants cross the river safely. While walking across the river, take lots of pictures and enjoy the wonderful architectural design. Enjoy the bridge. I highly recommend it. #newyearadventure
Memorial Temple of Han Yu
Welcome to the Memorial Temple of Han Yu. This temple will teach you about Han Yu, whom came to teach the people of Chaozhou. Han Yu opened a school and taught students many things. the most important lesson is behavior methods. Han Yu also developed many things in Chaozhou. You can learn a lot about his writings and experience his teachings. Han Yu is also featured in many students books. Perfect place for your child to learn. I highly recommend this place. #newyearadventure
Lanterns decorating the streets of Chaozhou
Wandering the streets of the old town in Chaozhou is like traveling back into time: endless lanes for exploring, traditional crafts and decorations everywhere, delicious dishes to keep you satiated, and of course an amazing tea culture! it even better during festivals, when you can see amazing lantern displays! Bring your cameras and enjoy the sights, sounds, and smells of Chaoshan culture #urbanexplorer #teaculture #tea #chaozhou #chaoshan #newyearadventure #china #lanternfestival
Gorgeous 12th century bridge
When visiting the old Town of Chaozhou is a good idea to be at this old bridge during sunset because in my opinion is when it looks the prettiest
There is a small fee to get into the bridge and see the boats closer, the interesting thing is that the bridge isn't compete by itself but made up by the smaller boats that arrived there, a very innovative way to collect the goods from other towns.
Which is your favorite picture?

Chaoshan 3 Day Trip (Chaozhou/Shantou/Nan’ao)
A region well-known for their attention to detail when it comes to food, Chaoshan is the perfect getaway if you wanna go home with a full stomach and a happy heart. Not a ton of sightseeing but travelers are there for the food anyway! Nan’ao island is pretty impressive and I definitely recommend renting a car and drive to and from the island if possible! Be sure to call your hotel ahead to get the latest COVID updates and also whether they will accept your ID type (many cannnot accept non Mainland Chinese travelers) #tigeryear2022
Getting There - direct flight from Shanghai ~2hrs
Attractions - Chaozhou: 牌坊街,广济桥 Shantou: 小公园,Nan’ao Island: 青澳灣 get coffee at Sea Candence!
Hotels - I don’t recommend the hotels I stayed at
Food & Restaurants - 雙生腸粉,老魏記杏仁茶,literally any meatball place
Shopping - they don’t have a ton of interesting souvenirs so I settled for plums and canned olives 🫒!
