Today's Weather
Mostly cloudy 2-5℃

Stop saying you're tired of Hokkaido! There are so many things to do in Eastern Hokkaido!
Eastern Hokkaido is the essence of Hokkaido tourism. The roads are bad and public transportation is inconvenient in winter, but this means that the beautiful scenery is preserved due to the lack of tourists.
It gets dark in Hokkaido at around 4 pm, so keep this in mind when planning your itinerary. I like natural scenery and cultural attractions, so if you're tired of the classic routes, don't miss the advanced routes in Hokkaido from February to March.
Hoshino Resorts: Hoshino TOMAMU Resort is the largest ski resort in Hokkaido. The powder snow is picturesque, and the 20+ ski runs will satisfy your skiing dreams. There are also exciting snow activities to enjoy the charm of ice and snow.
Shiretoko Hiking: Walk on the Shiretoko Peninsula and admire the magnificent drift ice. The Shiretoko Five Lakes or drift ice walks are both fascinating. Cross the snow to find traces of animals, and you may encounter foxes or deer, leaving unforgettable memories of nature.
Abashiri Icebreaker: Don't miss the winter-only Abashiri icebreaker tour. Feel the shock of nature in the icy sea, and you may encounter manatees, seals, and more, adding a mysterious touch to your journey.
Sapporo White Illumination: From November 22, 2024 to March 14, 2025, the Sapporo White Illumination Festival will be held at the same time as the German Christmas Market. The light show and food will bring a festive atmosphere and surprises.
Lake Akan Winter Carnival: From early February to early March, the Lake Akan Ice Park offers ice fishing, ice skating, snowmobiles, and more. It's lively and fun.
Itinerary Recommendations:
- Day 1: New Chitose Airport - Tanukikoji Shopping Street - Sapporo White Illumination.
- Day 2: Biei Popular Tree Tour - Asahiyama Zoo - Sounkyo Ice Waterfall Festival (January 25 to March 9) - Sounkyo Onsen.
- Day 3: Kitami Fox Village - Abashiri Icebreaker - Abashiri Prison Museum.
- Day 4: Shiretoko Hiking (various routes available).
- Day 5: Bihoro Pass - Lake Kussharo - Lake Mashu - Lake Akan Winter Carnival (early February to early March).
- Day 6: Akanko Ainu Kotan - Hoshino Resorts - Ice Platform - Ice Village.
Winter at Notoro Cape in Hokkaido
This is a famous spot for viewing drift ice in Abashiri City. It's about a 20-minute bus ride from the city, and since it was sunny, we could see the Shiretoko Mountain Range. The drift ice can sometimes be completely invisible depending on the day, so it's a matter of luck, but it's recommended for winter sightseeing in Abashiri.

[Hokkaido] A rare prison museum! Introducing the Abashiri Prison Museum
The Abashiri Prison Museum in Abashiri City, Hokkaido, is a preserved real prison that has been in use since the Meiji era, and you can visit the former Abashiri Prison, which was known for its extremely cold interior and harsh prison sentences. 🥶
The many dolls of prisoners and guards are very realistic, and you can understand the harsh environment at that time.
The main attraction is the radially extending cells to make it easier for the guards to keep an eye on them. Some prisoners managed to escape from Abashiri Prison by evading the strict security, and there are interesting exhibits such as dolls of prisoners escaping, which can be enjoyed by children and adults alike. ⭐️
For lunch, we recommend the "Prison Restaurant" attached to the Abashiri Prison Museum. 🍚
You can eat the same food as the current prisoners, and it has a reputation for being quite delicious. In fact, the hokke I ordered was very delicious with just the right amount of fat, and I was impressed that I could enjoy Hokkaido's delicious seafood gourmet even in a prison. ✨

I visited Lake Notoro!!
Lake Notoro (のとろこ) is a lake located in Abashiri, Hokkaido, Japan. Here are some of its features and attractions:
1. Characteristics as a Salt Lake
Lake Notoro is known as a salt lake, not a freshwater lake. It is connected to the Sea of Okhotsk, so the lake water contains salt. This creates a unique landscape where lake water and sea water mix.
2. Seasonal Scenery
Spring & Summer: Various wildflowers bloom around the area, allowing you to enjoy the natural beauty.
Autumn: From September to mid-October, the coral grass (Akkeshi-so) around the lake turns a vibrant red, creating a 'crimson carpet' that attracts many tourists. This is an iconic view of Lake Notoro.
Winter: The lake surface can freeze, and you can also observe drift ice in the nearby Sea of Okhotsk.
3. Rich Ecosystem and Nature
Lake Notoro is home to a diverse range of wildlife. It is especially known as a bird-watching spot, where you can enjoy various bird species throughout the seasons.
In this way, Lake Notoro is a tourist spot with different attractions throughout the year.
I visited Abashiri Prison!!
Abashiri Prison, located in Abashiri City, Hokkaido, is a historical prison established during the Meiji era. Initially, it was used for prisoners to engage in the development of Hokkaido under harsh conditions. Prisoners were particularly utilized as labor for constructing railways and roads in the undeveloped areas of Hokkaido, and life in the severe natural environment was extremely tough.
History and Role
Abashiri Prison was opened in 1890, and prisoners mainly engaged in the development of Hokkaido. Notably, prisoners known as the 'Five Men of Abashiri Prison' advanced the construction of the road from Abashiri to Asahikawa (known as the Prisoners' Road), significantly contributing to the development of Hokkaido.
Current Abashiri Prison
Today, part of Abashiri Prison is open to the public as the 'Abashiri Prison Museum,' where visitors can learn about the history of Japanese prisons, the lives of prisoners, and the development of Hokkaido. The museum features restored wooden buildings, tools used by prisoners, and exhibits recreating life inside the prison, making it a popular spot for many tourists.
Hokkaido | Visit the Sacred Site of Golden Kamuy, Abashiri Prison.
The manga 'Golden Kamuy,' which has been adapted into movies and dramas, is a hot topic.
I'm a big fan too, and the setting of the manga, which includes the important cultural properties of the prison cells and the central watchtower, is here at 'Abashiri Prison.'
Seeing the same scenery as in the manga right before my eyes made my heart swell with emotion. Shiraishi~!
I'd love to hear from fellow fans in the comments, haha.
This time, I visited because of the manga, but as I took my time to go around and read the explanations, it also became an opportunity to learn about various histories.
There were inhumane events and tragedies, but on top of that, there is the current Japan, Hokkaido, and our lives.
'From records to memories, in doing so, the prisoners who lost their lives might be redeemed.'
These words were very heavy.
The museum is spacious, rich in nature, and I even saw Ezo squirrels running around.
And if you come here, you must visit the 'Prison Cafeteria.'
You can eat meals that are recreated from what was actually served at Abashiri Prison.
And it was surprisingly delicious♡ Maybe because it's Hokkaido??

The view from the Tentozan Observatory was completely obscured by fog, so I could only step on the 44th parallel north.
I didn't go into the Okhotsk Ryuhyo Museum, I just went up to the rooftop Tentozan Observatory.
It was so foggy at the Tentozan Observatory that I couldn't see anything 🙈.
I could only take a photo on the 44th parallel north outside the museum.

Abashiri Prison-a great place for both education and entertainment

It was once the most difficult wooden prison in Japan to escape from.
The low temperature in winter can be as low as minus 30 degrees.
Major infrastructure construction in Hokkaido was completed by prisoners here,
The prison is now a museum commemorating these people.
It has a special construction and an unobstructed surveillance design.
The special arrangement makes it difficult for prisoners in the cells to communicate with each other.
Simulated dolls show life with the clothes and appliances of the time
The extremely harsh environment makes people feel the hard work of the people at that time
🗓️Itinerary: It will take about half a day to visit carefully

Fill the camera with a scenery, this is the beauty of the end of Hokkaido, Cape Notsuke
🌟A movie 'If You Are the One' has shown the beauty of Hokkaido, the northernmost part of Japan, to the world, and the stunning beauty of Cape Notsuke in Abashiri is fascinating.
❤Cape Notsuke is located at Notoro Cape, about 10 kilometers north of Abashiri City. Notoro is a cape that juts into the Sea of Okhotsk. 'Notoro' comes from the Ainu language not-oro (not-oro = at the cape or place).
🧳At the top here, there is only a lighthouse and a local management office. At one end of the cliff's cape, there is an octagonal Western-style black and white striped 'Cape Notsuke Lighthouse' (built in 1917). The lighthouse is about 21 meters tall, and Cape Notsuke is famous for its spectacular views, which can be enjoyed all year round. Behind it, Lake Notsuke is known for its autumn coral grass, but in the dead of winter, you can enjoy the spectacular scenery of the nearby drift ice. Walking to the very top, you can experience the incredible scene of being almost 360 degrees surrounded by drift ice.
👍Standing on Cape Notsuke, to the west you can see Lake Notsuke and the coast of Konan Town in Kitami City, and to the east you can see the distant Shiretoko Mountain Range. The vast panorama itself is a magnificent landscape, and the Chinese movie 'The Way to Get the Targeted Love' (original title: 'If You Are the One'), starring Noriko Sakai in 'The Antarctic Cook' and Sayuri Yoshinaga in 'The Cherry Blossom Guardian of the North', were all filmed here. In addition, it is also the location for the filming of an aviation advertisement by a famous idol group and the famous Toyota Prius advertisement.
🖼The coral reef area around Wild Bird Cape is also a habitat for seals. Having binoculars would be perfect when touring the cape. From mid-May to mid-October, cows and horses graze near the lighthouse at the Abashiri City Misaki Farm. In winter, the drift ice contacts the coast, making it the best spot to view the drift ice.

【Dinner】COTA Okhotsk Buffet
The open kitchen, brimming with a sense of openness, offers a menu featuring ingredients from Hokkaido's Okhotsk region. There's freshly fried tempura, sashimi including salmon, Moyoro pot where you can choose your ingredients, and pizza baked in a stone oven. There are so many options it can be hard to choose, but dinner is enjoyable. Desserts are plentiful, and you'll leave feeling full. If you're staying over, I recommend the hotel buffet for dinner.

Salmon from Morning! Unlimited Ikura and Sweet Shrimp at the Inn.
You can enjoy a menu that you would expect in Hokkaido from the morning. The sashimi (salmon with ikura) can be put on rice to make a seafood bowl, and you can choose your favorite ingredients for freshly made omelets and miso soup. The bread was also delicious. On the way to the breakfast venue, I even encountered a wild Ezo squirrel. It was a very satisfying hotel morning.

Abashiri, Hokkaido—Dormy Inn Hot Spring Hotel♨️
It takes about 10 minutes to walk slowly from Abashiri Station to the hotel. If you like to take a slow walk like this, you can also see the city, but if you are carrying luggage during snowy times, you have to consider the snow on the road😆
You can store your luggage before check-in time. The hotel is very close to the bus terminal. It only takes 3 minutes to walk. It is very convenient to take the bus to various points. In addition, I would like to mention that the hotel is very friendly. When the C/I actually checked in, he informed that the luggage was already in the room❤️
The room is not big, with an average-sized double bed and can only accommodate a 29-inch suitcase. The hotel has a bathhouse, so there is no bathtub in the room, so if you want to take a bath, you have to go to the bathhouse. If you need supplies, you have to get them in the lobby on the first floor. Welcome drinks are also prepared in the lobby on the first floor. It’s really comfortable to drink hot coffee in the cold weather😊
The public bathhouse also has an outdoor open-air hot spring. It didn't snow when we went there. Soaking in the hot spring in the snow should have a unique flavor☺️After bathing, you can eat popsicles from the freezer next to it, and lactic acid drinks are provided during the day.
There is Yeming Ramen from 21:30 to 23:00 in the evening. It is provided for free. There seems to be no limit on how many bowls you can eat (there are 3 bowls piled on the table next to the passenger). I think it’s better not to waste it😋
The breakfast buffet price is ¥2300. You can make your own seafood rice bowl and make-to-order omelettes. There is a large supermarket nearby, about 5 minutes' walk. It is very convenient to restock before leaving or when you first arrive💓

Ryūhyō Museum
#thingstodo For those interested in the sea angel (clione) and learning about drift ice, this museum is worth a visit. Although it's not a large museum, the exhibits are informative and engaging.
The museum offers a theatre that shows a documentary about drift ice with subtitles in different languages, including English. You can also explore several small aquariums featuring sea creatures from the Okhotsk Sea and visit an ice room where you can swing a towel and witness it freeze, which is a unique and enjoyable experience.
The observatory deck can be accessed without purchasing a ticket and you can enjoy a stunning panoramic view of the Okhotsk Sea, with drift ice stretching out for several kilometers. The majestic Shiretoko mountain range serves as a dramatic backdrop, completing the breathtaking scenery.
If you're a fan of salted caramel flavor, you'll love the ice cream sold on the first floor - it's absolutely delicious!
Overall, I recommend this museum to anyone who wants to learn more about drift ice and see some incredible sea creatures, particularly the cute and charming sea angel.
Okhotsk Ryūhyō Museum
#thingstodo A great museum to learn about the wildlife and drift ice of the area. Many displays have English, including the professionally-produced video. There is a drift ice experience room, where they keep the temperature well below freezing and give you a damp towel which you can swing around and see what funny shape it freezes in. The small aquarium also functions as a 3D video screen that the staff can operate (you can ask them to show you if it's not busy); you can see a diver's science excursion in the sea. The free observation deck upstairs has a nice view, and the ice cream from the cafe is a light salt-caramel flavor
Hokkaidō Museum of Northern People
#thingstodo A wonderful museum presenting the lives and cultures of various northern native peoples. A very visual museum with numerous displays, archival documentary footage, and touchscreens with English information. Check the website for a ¥50 discount. There is no cafe or restaurant, but there are vending machines and coin lockers. I spent about 90 minutes here.
Hokkaidō Museum of Northern People
#thingstodo A really beautiful museum. The whole exhibition is arranged in an entertaining and informative way. It doesn't just include Ainu, but Inuit and many other norther indigenous people. Unfortunately some of the wording in the English is a bit out of date.
We were completely alone in the museum. It was a calm and wonderful experience. highly recommended
Wakkanai Daqu Lakeside Park | The warmth in the cold
After visiting the Wakkanai Prison Museum, going downhill along National Road 39, one side is the Wakkanai River that runs through the city. When waiting for the car, it was sunset, and the cold Daqu Lakeside Park on the opposite side was quite warm!
In general, Wakkanai is relatively remote and sparsely populated. The cold wind blows on the dark streets in the evening, and there are almost no pedestrians. The brightest place is the warm 'Eat at Home'!
Abashiri Prison | If you want to eat prison food, please experience
Travel thousands of miles to the northeastern corner of Hokkaido - Abashiri, just to eat a meal of prison food ! As a result, I found that the prison canteen has moved from the prison to the outside of the prison gate, this 900 yen prison meal is not authentic , but the taste is still good (Figure 4)!
During the Meiji period, in order to resist Russia's southward search for a non-freezing port, the government decided to rapidly develop Hokkaido. Using the prisoners sent to Abashiri Prison to build roads became a "masterstroke": saving costs by working, and saving expenses when they died! As a result, 1115 prisoners worked for 8 months, built 228 kilometers of roads, and 211 people died.
The cold and hard Abashiri Prison has created many prison break kings, among which Torakichi escaped three times, and the last time he was caught back after being pierced by a 5-inch nail, he was later called "Five-inch nail Torakichi" (Figure 7).
Because the Abashiri prison break incidents are frequently reported in the media, it has attracted public attention and finally forced the authorities to improve the treatment of prisoners in Japanese prisons.
⏳Play time: 3 hours
💰Average consumption: ticket JP1500/person
🌟Highlights: The taste of prison food is really good 😌, and there is a paid project for taking prison photos , and staying in prison for one night ! The play is the "not taboo at all" prison experience 🚓😵💫😵💫
🚉Traffic strategy: direct bus 🚌

[Hokkaido] Enjoy the Sea of Okhotsk on a limited-time tourist train
Visited in February 2023
*Drift Ice Story
JR Hokkaido's tourist train "Drift Ice Story" runs right next to the Okhotsk Sea when it is filled with drift ice😊
Whether you can see the drift ice depends on luck, but you can enjoy this rare sight that can only be seen here on Japanese railways from inside the train✨
Train running between Abashiri Station and Shiretoko Shari Station
The distance traveled is 37.3km☺️
This year the drift ice was late and had not yet come ashore, but I was able to see it from afar🙌
There was also original goods for sale, so I had a lot of fun🥰

Hokkaido winter frozen Abashiri lake view
Lake Abashiri is a lake across Abashiri City, Hokkaido, Japan, and is part of the Abashiri Quasinational Park. It is adjacent to the Sea of Okhotsk and sometimes connected to each other. About 6,000 years ago, Lake Abashiri was once the Sea of Okhotsk. As the sea level receded and the land rose, Lake Abashiri changed from a bay to a land lake 1,200 years ago.
In winter, due to the severe cold weather in Hokkaido, Lake Abashiri freezes and seals the lake. Ice fishing is also popular here only in winter, and it is also very suitable for self-driving tourists to take a road trip to the shores of Hokkaido's lakes and coasts.

Okhotsk Ryuhyokan in Hokkaido, eat salty ice cream and enjoy the beautiful scenery.
During your self-driving trip to Hokkaido, when you come to the coast of Okhotsk, you might as well consider stopping at the Okhotsk Drift Ice Museum to have a salty and fragrant ice cream and enjoy the beautiful view from the top floor. The Okhotsk Drift Ice Museum has a space to experience the ice at minus 15 degrees Celsius and introduce drift ice creatures, but I think the most worthwhile thing is the observation deck on the top floor, overlooking the beautiful scenery of the coast.

Beautiful Ehorike Coast scenery in Abashiri, Hokkaido
Abashiri City is located in the eastern part of Hokkaido, Japan, facing the Sea of Okhotsk in the north. Within the jurisdiction, there is Lake Notori in the northwest, Lake Abashiri in the center, and Lake Tobi in the east, all of which belong to the Abashiri Quasinational Park. If you come to Hokkaido for free travel, it is suitable to drive here. You can enjoy the scenery along the way and feel the magnificent mountain and sea scenery.

The world's oldest prison!? "Abashiri Prison"
This time we will introduce "Abashiri Prison"!
Located at the foot of scenic Mt. Tento, this open-air history museum has the theme of "Hokkaido development and prisoners".
It preserves and displays buildings that have been used by Abashiri Prison since the Meiji era.
The oldest building was built 109 years ago, six years after the prison came to Abashiri.
Unlike today, wood was sawn by hand, without the use of machines, and the thick beams and pillars still bear the rough marks of prisoners' carving.
The "Five-Wing Radial Single-Story Cell Block", which opened to the public in 1985, is the oldest prison facility in Japan and the oldest wooden penal building in the world!
The site area is about 3.5 Tokyo Domes, and a tour takes about 1.5 to 2 hours.
If you come to Abashiri, please be sure to visit!
