Chateau Jasper

Jasper|0.76km from city centre
Arrived fairly late and we’re new to Jasper. So we decided to eat in for the first night. I knew we were in trouble when the young man at reception put a call through to an extension. His colleague in the back office told him there was no-one in. He merely shrugged and said “stuff happens”, not thinking for one second that he was showing appalling customer service. This was so unlike the usual excellent service we’d received all the way across Canada, I was surprised. So he turned to us. When we asked about the restaurant we were told it was open for breakfast only. And that was what it states on their website. We checked there and then. It doesn’t mention it! So I asked about the bar - was that at least open. “Yes”, he said. “At breakfast”. (I never actually tested that.) He continued to insist that the restaurant was not closed - it was merely only open for breakfast. In the end he shrugged again and said (with no sense of empathy) “Sorry, what can I say?” This was such a shame that this surly, uncaring man is the first face of the hotel, because the service we received from other staff members was much better. They don’t service the rooms, but a request for coffee, etc, was acted on in 5 minutes. I would have preferred real coffee mugs and glasses, but it’s a small point. The rooms themselves are large and comfortable, if a little dated. The hotel is situated about a 10 minute flat walk to the centre to town. And the town has a friendly welcoming feel to it. People would say hello as you walked in. So, sorry, Chateau Jasper, you need to train your reception staff. Or suggest they find a calling outside the hospitality industry.

The location is very convenient, especially the Korean restaurant very close to this.

So many fruit flies in the bathroom. AC was loud (but thank God for it!) Free Wi-Fi! The room also has a balcony, and the price is comparably cheap to other places in the area. On Connaught Dr., so lots of dinner options just a walk away. Loads of parking spots available. Shower was hard to use but that’s just a me thing (two knobs.) Good place otherwise.

Prices are a little high as others have said but if you time your trip right it can be worth it for a little peace and quiet. I would recommend bringing board games and maybe a couple books as there is no TV which is the only thing I regret (this was noted on their website) that I didn't bring. The front desk agents were very polite and helpful :) when we asked if they had board games to rent, she kindly offered to drop some after she went home as she would bring her own games to us. We told her no thanks but we definitely appreciated her efforts to make our stay enjoyable. During COVID times and probably the time of year a few of the amenities that were mentioned (lawn games etc) were not available to rent. Which is understandable. Cabin had everything we need, stove top, pots & pans, cutlery and all. It stayed warm when outside was quite chilly and the bed was comfortable. When it's warmer next time I would love to explore the trails in the area unfortunately it was a little chilly when we went so we weren't in the mood to explore.

Jasper's hotels are estimated to be similar. There are no elevators on 2 floors, the rooms are not very large, and the facilities are relatively simple. Although they are good, they have capsule coffee machines. Just to rest for a night, you can still. The heater is very powerful and warm up, but the sound is quite loud. The main restaurants are all on the same street, just a few minutes drive from the hotel. The best business is a beer factory, which is more cost-effective. I went to Pyramid Lake early in the morning on the second day. There were not many people and the scenery was good, but I didn't feel too amazing.
