In the Tower: Chakaia Booker: Treading New Ground | National Gallery of Art

Apr 5–Aug 2, 2025 (UTC-5)
Washington D.C.
Exhibitions
See three awe-inspiring sculptures by an American artist who transforms tires to explore environmental concerns. For over four decades, Chakaia Booker has cut, coiled, and contorted tires, sculpting the industrial waste into spectacular abstract forms. Booker uses discarded tires both as a commentary on cultural histories and experiences and as a sustainable practice. Salvaging the tires avoids their disposal into landfills, where they trap and emit methane gas. Her works encourage us to consider the history of the material of tires as well as the effect rubber can have on our future. Three monumental wall relief sculptures—Acid Rain (2001), Echoes in Black (Industrial Cicatrization) (1996), and It’s So Hard to Be Green (2000)—are presented. Each sculpture spans 20 to 21 feet wide and features a mass of curled bands of tire rubber, some interspersed with spiky shards, coiled strips, and loops made from inner tubes. Booker’s six-part photogravure series Foundling Warrior Quest (II 21C) (2010) showcases the artist as a mythical being foraging in a harsh, industrial landscape.

Back and Forth: Rozeal., Titian, Cezanne | National Gallery of Art

Apr 26, 2025–Apr 25, 2026 (UTC-5)
Washington D.C.
Exhibitions
Art history isn’t linear. Artists mix and remix references, finding inspiration across time. When contemporary artist Rozeal. began painting afro.died, T. in 2011 in her studio just outside Washington, DC, she didn’t have Titian’s Venus with a Mirror in mind. Paul Cezanne wasn’t thinking about Titian’s Ranuccio Farnese when he painted Boy in a Red Waistcoat in 19th-century France. Yet these works share striking visual similarities with Titian’s 16th-century paintings. Back and Forth illuminates unexpected connections between these four works and invites us to see them in new ways.

Little Beasts: Art, Wonder, and the Natural World | National Gallery of Art

May 18–Nov 2, 2025 (UTC-5)
Washington D.C.
Exhibitions
Experience the wonders of nature through the eyes of an artist. Look closely at works of art that depict insects and other animals, as well as real specimens. Art played a key role at the dawn of natural history in 16th and 17th century Europe. Advances in science and technology, trade, and colonial expansion enabled naturalists to study previously unknown and overlooked insects, animals, and other beestjes, or "little beasts." Artists such as Joris Hoefnagel and Jan van Kessel helped deepen and spread knowledge of these creatures through highly detailed and playful works that inspired generations of printmakers, painters, decorative artists, and naturalists. A delight for all ages, this exhibition uniquely showcases nearly 75 of these paintings, prints, and drawings, as well as specimens and taxidermy from the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History. Learn about the rich exchanges between artists and naturalists that have fueled our fascination with creatures big and small on Earth. Watch a new film by artist Dario Robleto to see how the intersection of art and science continues to inspire us.

Last Minute!: Latinas Report Breaking News | Smithsonian National Museum of American History

Sep 15, 2023–Aug 17, 2025 (UTC-5)
Washington D.C.
Exhibitions
Latina journalists wrote the first draft of history for Spanish-speaking communities in the United States.Breaking News! Latinas Report Breaking News is a bilingual exhibition featuring stories from Latina journalists to show how Spanish-language television gave voice and visibility to a broad segment of the American public and how these journalists advocate for Spanish-speaking communities and navigate the fast-paced, ever-changing pace of breaking news. In the approximately 1,000-square-foot gallery, visitors will explore broadcast journalism through the work of journalists such as Ilia Calderón, Dunia Elvir, Marilys Llanos, Gilda Mirós, Lori Montenegro, Maria Elena Salinas, and Blanca Rosa Vílchez. A multimedia piece will illustrate these women's accounts as eyewitnesses to important histories like the Vietnam War, 9/11, and the Black Lives Matter protests, as well as issues of cultural and political significance to local Latinx communities that are sometimes overlooked by English-language news. Working in the characteristic fast-paced, ever-changing environment of news production, these women shaped the narrative of major historical events while collaborating with their local and national Latinx communities to provide news coverage that meets their needs.

How to Be a Thrones Player: Tudor Edition | Folger Shakespeare Library

Feb 21–Aug 10, 2025 (UTC-5)
Washington D.C.
Exhibitions
Social climbing was a competitive sport in Tudor England, requiring a complex range of skills, strategies, and techniques. How to Be a Power Player: Tudor Edition invites you into a world of lace ruffs, jousting, hawks, bad handwriting, scandal, and political factions. Experience the playbooks, the people, and the spectacular fails, as courtiers tried to navigate the minefield of working for a boss who could shower you with riches or chop off your head. The exhibition features more than 60 objects from the Folger’s collection to demonstrate the “rules” for how to be a successful courtier. They show how historical and literary figures ranging from royal advisors to household staff used cunning, cutthroat, and creative means to acquire power and curry favor with the Tudor monarchs.

In the Library: Animal Illustration in Europe, 1550–1750 | National Gallery of Art

May 19–Oct 31, 2025 (UTC-5)
Washington D.C.
Exhibitions
From the largest mammals to the smallest insects, the animal world has always inspired writers and illustrators. Since ancient times, humans have projected character traits onto animals. In medieval Europe, animals became subjects of a new literary genre of religious stories. At the same time, a growing interest in science made artists concerned with anatomic accuracy. See how illustrators approached the same creatures from different perspectives during this period of rich development. You’ll find early scientific drawings, illustrated fables, and drawing manuals from the 16th to 18th centuries—all rarely on view.

YCW DC | Hong Kong and Bangkok in Beijing's Shadow, 2015-2025 | Dacha Beer Garden (Shaw)

Jun 11, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Washington D.C.
Conferences
Hong Kong and Bangkok have followed very different trajectories in the last ten years, and in some ways, they have even reversed positions: from 2015 to 2025, each city has witnessed dramatic protests in which youths played important roles, and some of those youths then got elected to office, and each city has witnessed harsh crackdowns on dissent. Another thread of connection has been Beijing's influence over the actions of Hong Kong's government and Thailand's power holders. This is obvious in Hong Kong's case, but it is also present in Bangkok's decisions (in 2015 and again in 2025) to send Uyghurs seeking refuge in Thailand back to China. The two guest participants in this Young China Watchers event have both had a long-term interest in Hong Kong, which was the subject of Wasserstrom's 2020 book Vigil , and the first place Tharoor was posted as a journalist. Each have also been tracking Beijing's influence over neighboring countries and writing at times about Thailand, Tharoor in his Washington Post column and Worldview newsletter, and Wasserstrom in his new Columbia Global Reports book The Milk Tea Alliance: Inside Asia's Struggle Against Autocracy and Beijing , which publishes June 10. Join Young China Watchers DC on Wednesday, June 11, from 6:00 - 7:30 PM for a wide-ranging discussion on China, Hong Kong, and the influence of Beijing in Asia. Following the presentation, individuals are welcome to stay for a casual happy hour and socializing. The event will be held at Dacha Loft (the private event space above the Dacha Beer Garden, Shaw Location). Please consider buying a drink to keep these events free! Speakers: Jeffery Wasserstrom Jeffrey Wasserstrom is Chancellor’s Professor of History at UC Irvine, where he also holds courtesy affiliations in Law and Literary Journalism. Holder of a B.A. from UC Santa Cruz, a master’s from Harvard, and a doctorate from Berkeley, he has written, coauthored, edited or coedited more than ten books. His most recent books are: Vigil: Hong Kong on the Brink (2020) and China in the 21st Century: What Everyone Needs to Know, updated third edition coauthored with Maura Elizabeth Cunningham (Oxford, 2018). In addition to writing for academic journals, Wasserstrom has contributed to many general interest venues, e.g., the New York Times, the TLS, and the Wall Street Journal. He is the co-editor at the Los Angeles Review of Books China Section. He served as a consultant for two prize-winning Long Bow Film Group documentary, was interviewed on camera for the film “Joshua; Teenager vs. Superpower,” and is a former member of the Board of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations. Ishaan Tharoor Ishaan Tharoor is a foreign affairs columnist in the newsroom of the Washington Post where he anchors Today’s WorldView, the Post’s daily column and newsletter on global politics. Through frequent use of comparative frames, his columns make both the rest of the world intelligible to an American audience and America understandable for the rest of the world. They are anchored in the dominant themes and ideas of the moment — charting the twists and turns of the evolving geopolitical order, the travails of liberal democracies and the increasingly global debates over multiculturalism and identity. Today’s WorldView, which launched in early 2017, attracts a huge daily audience of readers from around the world. Prior to joining the Post in 2014, Ishaan was a senior editor and writer at Time magazine for eight years split between Hong Kong and New York. His work for the magazine’s international edition took him from the jungle redoubts of Nepal’s Maoists to the hurly-burly of election season in the Philippines and many places in between. He also launched Time’s first foray into foreign affairs blogging and eventually presided over the entirety of its international digital coverage. He and his twin brother Kanishk — also a writer and journalist — were born in Singapore to Indian parents, raised initially in Geneva but mostly in New York, and graduated from Yale University. He lives in Washington, DC with his wife, Bhumika Davé Tharoor, a managing editor at The Atlantic. He teaches a seminar at Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service on global affairs in the digital age. Information Source: Young China Watchers | eventbrite

Cultural Experiences
Give yourself permission to step away, for a time, from the concerns of the world. Join us for an immersive walk along the Tregaron footpaths in the tradition of Shinrin-yoku or forest bathing, a Japanese wellness practice that helps individuals access the healing properties of nature. The experience begins with an orientation to, and expression of gratitude for, the place where we will be spending our time. It includes warm-ups, centering, breathing exercises, a non-strenuous walk, and a brief time sitting. We conclude by reflecting on the experience and learning how the practice can be used in daily life. Our guide is Susan West Montgomery , a Kripalu Certified Outdoor Mindfulness Guide. She specializes in developing customized excursions at natural, historic, and cultural sites where she can deepen the mindfulness experience by layering in the nature-culture connection. Preparation: We will be walking on mulched trails and stone steps with some moderate hill climbing. Bring a jacket if light rain is expected. Technology and Civilian Innovation in Defense: Rethinking Taiwan Resilience | DPP U.S. Mission

Jun 2, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Washington D.C.
Conferences
Background As Washington continues to assess Taiwan’s self-defense capacity largely through the lens of defense budgets and conventional military readiness, this event invites a broader conversation: What truly defines a nation’s ability to endure and respond to conflict? Drawing on over three years of Ukraine’s wartime experience, we explore how resilience is not built by state institutions and armed forces alone, but also through the mobilization of civil society and the adaptability of its technology ecosystem. From rapid drone innovation to decentralized, civilian-driven supply chains, Ukraine has demonstrated how democratic societies can shape defense outcomes in unconventional and powerful ways. In this context, Taiwan stands at the forefront of a pressing global challenge. As a technologically advanced democracy facing sustained coercion from the People’s Republic of China, Taiwan is actively exploring new modes of defense that combine formal military capabilities with civilian technological innovation and whole-of-society resilience strategies. Objectives This discussion aims to broaden how Taiwan’s defense resilience is understood within the Washington policy community. By highlighting lessons from Ukraine — including civil-military collaboration, open-source innovation, and responses to gray-zone tactics — the event offers alternative frameworks for evaluating preparedness beyond traditional metrics. It will also explore how Taiwan’s technological capacity and civic engagement could serve as key pillars of defense in a future crisis, demonstrating how democratic societies can respond creatively to authoritarian threats. Featuring speakers with expertise in civilian-led drone innovation, wartime supply chains, and China’s military modernization, the discussion offers U.S. policymakers and defense analysts timely insights into how Taiwan’s evolving experience can inform more adaptive and democratic approaches to security.
