No Choice Cuts | St Margaret's House
Oct 4, 2025 (UTC+0)
London
No Choice Cuts began as an exploration of randomness and creative control. Do we actually choose when we create? Or do habit, semiotics, composition rules, material constraints—and unseen forces—make choices for us? What seems like authorship may, in truth, be the result of a much more complex distribution of intention. On one of the election days, amidst the rituals of public choice, we went to a secondhand book market and handed over the act of selection to strangers. We asked random passersby to name numbers. These numbers determined the magazines we would each work with—materials chosen by others, not by us.
From that point, the rules were strict: no materials beyond what the magazines gave us, plus scissors, glue sticks, and black or white A4 paper. No digital tools. No editing. No printing. Each artist worked only with the pages of her assigned magazine.
Across multiple creative sprints, we cut, composed, and assembled hundreds of collages—each one a moment in a longer dialogue. About the Artists – VoDa Collab. VoDa Collab is an artistic duo formed by Yuliia Poliska (Voitenko) and Nataliia Danova (Magda Nova). Their name combines their surnames—VOitenko and DAnova—highlighting the collaborative and equal nature of their practice. Yuliia Poliska, currently serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, has a background in illustration, graphic design, creative writing, and storytelling. Her work is shaped by a strong sense of structure and visual narrative, with a focus on the relationship between image, language, and meaning. Nataliia Danova, also known as Magda Nova, is a temporarily displaced Ukrainian artist living in Edinburgh, Scotland. She has a background in music performance as well as experience in graphics, multimedia, and mixed media. Her work explores composition, material, and process, often combining different artistic methods in an intuitive and reflective way.

Cut, Colour, Collage: Create Your Own Concertina Art Book Workshop | Coopers Yard Studios
Oct 4, 2025 (UTC+0)
London
This event is part of Crystal Palace Artist Open House Join us for a fun, hands-on workshop where we’ll explore the playful side of collage and mark-making to create your very own mini concertina book of abstract artwork. We’ll start by making our own collage papers using a variety of materials—crayons, oil pastels, acrylic paints—and experimenting with mark-making and textures. This part of the session is all about freedom and fun. There’s no right or wrong—just colour, creativity and expression. Once we’ve built a collection of unique painted, patterned, and textured sheets, we’ll begin to cut, tear, and reassemble them into new abstract compositions. You’ll be guided through the process of assembling your collaged pages into a small concertina book (with around 4–8 pages), creating a beautiful sequence of images that speak to each other like a visual family. One page might echo another across the book, forming connections, rhythms and surprises. You’ll leave with a handmade book filled with your own abstract creations—something you can treasure, display, or use as a springboard for future work. What’s included: All materials and toolsStep-by-step guidance throughoutA relaxed, welcoming atmosphereYour finished concertina book to take homeWho it’s for: This workshop is designed for adults of all creative abilities—whether you're an experienced artist or simply curious to try something new. No prior experience is needed, just a willingness to explore and enjoy the process. Group size: Minimum of 8 participants to keep it personal and supportive. Come and spend a few hours being creative and connected. We can’t wait to see what you’ll make.

2025 marks 1,700 years since the formation of the Creed of Nicaea, and around the world many Christian churches from many different denominations are marking the anniversary. But what is so important about it and why do we still say it so many years on?
Morwenna Ludlow will give a very brief history of how the Creed of Nicaea came to be, what it sought to address, and how it relates to other creeds and early statements of faith.
Join us as we explore the ongoing legacy of the Nicene Creed and the key question: when a community stands and says,
“We believe,”
what are they truly doing?
Morwenna Ludlow
is Professor of Christian History and Theology at the University of Exeter, and holds an honorary position as Canon Theologian at Exeter Cathedral. Her particular interest is on the early church and the reception of early theology by modern thinkers, alongside implications for the world today.

Earthworm Identification | Natural History Museum
Oct 7, 2025 (UTC+1)
London
There are 33 species of earthworm living freely in soils in the UK. They are vital to the economic health of our country, as they are crucial for soil health, food production, waste decomposition and even flood mitigation.
Despite their importance, relatively few people are skilled in identifying earthworms to species level. Identification of earthworms involves inspecting specimens under a microscope to observe key morphological features that are often too small to see with the naked eye. However, with only 5 features used to distinguish between the 33 species, earthworms are a great group for novices. Learn the difference between a tanylobic and epilobic head type, how to record the position of the clitellum and how to determine if the setae on an earthworm are closely or widely paired.
What will be covered during this course?
This course provides an introduction to identifying British earthworms. This includes a short presentation introducing the morphological features used to identify specimens to species level and support from an Earthworm Society of Britain tutor throughout the practical sessions.
Please note that this course will involve using specimens that have been killed and preserved.
By the end of the course, learners will:
Understand which external (morphological) features used in earthworm identification.
Know how to work through the Key to the Earthworms of the UK & Ireland to determine earthworm specimens accurately to species level.
Have practical experience observing earthworm ID features using a microscope and specimen collection.
No microscope experience is necessary – our tutors will set up and show you how to use a microscope.
