The Clapham Grand

Oct 1, 2025 (UTC+0)
London
Arts
Comedy
Age restriction: 18+. Semyon Slepakov grew up in a family where humour was an integral part of life: sharp jokes, anecdotes, and funny stories were a constant presence. His father was from Rostov, his mother from Pyatigorsk, just like Semyon himself. However, his family roots extend further—to Ukraine: Odesa, Poltava, Kharkiv, and Chernobyl. Both of his grandfathers were economists and envisioned an academic career for their grandson. However, during his school years, the future artist was far from the image of a diligent intellectual heir: he could break a desk or throw something at passers-by from a window. Following family traditions, Slepakov wrote a PhD dissertation analysing the economic efficiency of the Caucasian Mineral Waters resorts compared to their French counterparts. However, academia did not bring him creative fulfilment. The desire to make people laugh took over. His first attempts at humour were far from successful. As he recalled: “My father advised me not to laugh until I had told the punchline. And not to laugh alone—wait for others to laugh first.” This lesson stayed with Semyon for life. True success came in the field of comedy: witty song lyrics, popular TV projects, millions of online views, scripts, and the production of iconic comedy series—Slepakov became one of the best in Russia. But everything changed with the outbreak of war. Slepakov took a firm anti-war stance, which led to a ban on his work in Russia. Interestingly, in an old interview, he once joked about such a scenario: “Will they ban me? Cut off my hand? Which songs will they ban—only the funny ones or all of them? Will they forbid me to sing altogether? Well, then I’ll write books, poems, do stand-up. The main thing is to express myself and maintain a connection with people. The method of communication does not matter.” That is exactly what happened. His concerts continue to sell out worldwide. For two years, Slepakov lived in Israel, but he has only now decided to return to the stage—and on a grand scale. Five concerts in five cities, almost completely sold out with minimal advertising—a clear sign that the audience remembers, loves, and awaits him. His new programme will include everything: dialogue with the audience, jokes, songs, reflections on life, and stories of what has happened over the past two years. On stage stands a man labelled a “foreign agent” by Russian authorities, an Israeli citizen by passport and at heart, who continues to write, sing, film, and move forward. These will be special evenings—filled with humour, warm interactions, and the important realisation that life goes on. For Semyon Slepakov and for his fans. Address: The Clapham Grand, 21-25, St John\'s Hl, London SW11 1TT Age restriction: 18+ Valid physical photo ID is required BOX A-F are designed for a maximum of 4 people Tickets include £1 venue restoration levy Information Source: Event House | eventbrite

Exhibitions
A major exhibition of the trailblazing surrealist photographer Lee Miller With the most extensive retrospective of her photography yet staged in the UK, Tate Britain celebrates Lee Miller as one of the 20th century's most urgent artistic voices. First exposed to a camera by working in front of it, Miller was one of the most sought-after models of the late 1920s. She quickly stepped behind the lens, becoming a leading figure in the avant-garde scenes in New York, Paris, London and Cairo. The exhibition will showcase Miller’s extraordinary career, from her participation in French surrealism to her fashion and war photography. Exploring her artistic collaborations, the exhibition will also shed light on lesser-known sides of her practice, such as her remarkable images of the Egyptian landscape in the 1930s.

Your involvement will centre on textile-themed activities designed to promote cultural exchange and creativity, thereby bringing to life the rich sartorial heritage of the ‘Threads of Elegance: Conserving the Legacy of Beale and Inman Tailors’ Project. . The project has been funded by St James’s Ward through Westminster City Council’s Ward Budget Programme, for the benefit of local residents. More about the: ‘Threads of Elegance: Conserving the Legacy of Beale and Inman Tailors’ Project. Westminster City Archives preserves the exceptional records of Beale and Inman (ca. 1828–1980), one of the West End’s most distinguished tailors, renowned for its craftsmanship and role in shaping men’s fashion during the golden age of bespoke tailoring. Founded in 1828 on New Bond Street by James Beale and later joined by Richard Inman, the firm catered to an elite clientele including European royalty such as Emperor Napoleon III and the King of the Netherlands, British royals like King Edward VII and King George V, and famous figures including Charles Dickens, Winston Churchill, and Sir Paul McCartney. The archives include detailed sales ledgers, order books (some with fabric samples) from the 1940s to 1980, and pattern books from the 1930s to 1970s, reflecting both individual and institutional clients. A rare set of “New Names” books offers insight into client creditworthiness, often with strikingly frank assessments from other top London retailers, making this collection an invaluable resource for understanding luxury tailoring and social history.
